Hello all,

I am adding a chat thread about various slips since they've become popular across a number of retailers and the topic of preference seems to pop up periodically. Which do you consider more desirable and why? Full, lenti, half, quarter?

Enjoy!:scat:

Usually I go for a Lenti BUT it really depends on what is on offer and the uniqueness.

One example is the KimchiDVD/General Tangled releases.

If I had to put them in a preferred order - Lenti > Full Slip > 1/4

I have a question for you in terms of collecting

In terms of Thor and Frozen Kimchi, why do people see the 1/4 slip as less valuable than the lenticular ? or maybe it's just my distorted view/or what some people have said

They are a much lower print run, only 300 produced as opposed to 700(more than double), they will be harder to find since not many produced, they are beautiful (especially Frozen I find it has something extra special 1/4 slip)

Both back covers are same as Lenticular and are gorgeous.

The only difference with The Lenticular is that it has the front with a different picture(back of Lenticulars are the same as the 1/4 slip) so basically the only difference is visually with the Lenticular you get a different front as well, 1/4 slip has same back cover.

Plus they have all the same bonus material.

I'm just trying to understand, will it be with time, like 2 or 3 year that now the 1/4 slip being so low produced that they will gain their value at that time ?

what is your thought on this as a collector if I may ask

Demand is reflected in how they split the exclusives. 1/4 slips always have smaller prints due to this. Also in secondary markets the difference is clearly seen as lenticular releases sell for more than the 1/4 slips. I have yet to see a 1/4 slip release eclipse the lenticular, at least not in the kimchi line.

well I did see a 1/4 slip of Frozen sell for 300 US recently...

I personally find that the 1/4 slip of Frozen, same artwork in back and that beautiful Steel, it has charm and exclusivity...lower Print Run, Yes the Lenticular is nice, if it's a Lenticular under 100 number i'd say ok I can understand but the 1/4 slip in a year I feel will gain more value seeing it's beauty and it's limited Print Run.

I personally prefer full slips, because I tend to open my Steelbooks, regardless of run, rarity, etc. The 1/4 to me ones are a little bit more 'messy' when you open them, because then you take it off, and have to remember to put it back on...kinda like your lingerie.

But, on the other hand I have also gained quite an appreciation for 1/4's, like the one on my Gravity Futurepak, which I love with the red Chinese characters.

I think the 'desirability' often has to do with how many there are of each vs. the total run, but I know from many comments from our members, that it really, really depends on title, whether they want to open them, etc. I know some members like to keep theirs sealed, so the 1/4 slips let you see more of the actual Steel art. Sometimes the full slips make it harder to find protective covers (but there are solutions). Seems like many variables, specific to the type of metal packaging fan you are, and why you buy them at all...

Little Boys and girls buy for slips, Real men buy for the steel lol! :p

Personally I prefer full slips, especially nice glossy ones like Kimchi produced for Leon. That one was just gorgeous, especially with the clear protective case over the top. It just said "class" to me over Lenti's which I think suit children/Family films and 1/4 slips which I don't really have any interest in.

The rarity aspect has little effect on me regarding 1/4 slips as I open all my steels and like Digitalbabe says they are a pain to deal with. I collect first and foremost for the film, then the art. If the art is good I will buy it but I certainly wouldn't buy a 1/4 slip because it "might" be valuable or looks good when sealed. Steels to me either look great in full slips or naked!

I do agree with that, It's nice to see the beauty of the steel all wrapped up but with the same back artwork as the Lenticular...

Some I prefer full Slip (for example Thor as this steelbook has been used on so many releases) so I can see the steelbook on other releases and Kimchi to enjoy the Lenticular... Monster University by far The Lenticular Mike version so darn freakin cute the artwork, but than again there's no 1/4 slip...

Frozen by far 1/4 slip, after Lenticular...when BF comes out Anna will become my favorite after will be Frozen Kimchi 1/4 Slip...

so yes I guess lots of factor...

but lets say in 5 years, things might be seen totally differently.

clear slip when needed and done right

If I'm keeping steel sealed ; quarter slip so i can still see the SteelBook
If I'm opening steel ; then lenti or full

I like the hollow-out slips (Blufans Oz in particular)

That is one unique slip. I'm still looking to get one. Sometimes, there are some steels that come out and their uniqueness create an excitement and desire among collectors.

For me, the Taiwan 1/4 slips and overall packaging give steelbooks an added charm. Thor TDW comes to mind. The photos of Taiwan Captain America I've seen is a GEM.

Full slip ala Plain Archive's the Wrestler! Although I also think Kimchi did a great job with the Leon full slip. If only all steel came like that. :(

I'm nuts about "DRIVE" Future Shop Exclusive Scorpion Slip!

Dang that really was something special. When you think of all the best ones, it's disappointing that you get so many that are mediocre.
