what are chances sony just prints region B on the 3d disc art without the disc having the region code actually set

Reasonably high imo. I genuinely cannot remember the last "new" sony disc I had that was region locked. Some of their old Mi4K blu-ray discs perhaps, fifth element springs to mind.

Don't know if you are aware but I received an email from them this morning saying that they have been informed that will be region locked to B

"An update about
Spider-man: No Way Home 3D

Thank you to everyone who has supported our recent pre-order release for Spider-man: No Way Home 3D.

Sadly we have been informed that we received incorrect information from Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment regarding the region coding of the release, and unfortunately the 3D disc will in fact be REGION B locked".

Yeah i had that email too. Started reading it, fully expecting them to say "sadly we have had incorrect info and this will not be released" lol unusual for sony to lock discs now, particularly ones they have worldwide distribution of. They must really not want this disc sold to the Chinese (or in extention, the US)!

All the recent Japanese 3D Blu-Ray discs from Disney (Ralph Breaks Internet, Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi) only show region A on disc artwork but both 2D and 3D discs are actually region free. However RSM e-mailed to inform buyers it is locked to Region B??

true, and i have some of those, but disney is not sony.

i figure with australia being an english speaking market, these are the discs Sony is sure will inevitably escape to US/CAN/EU, compared to a more limited japanese or korean release with subs or dubs included. many posts on another forum were about how they'll wait to order it from RSM's amazon store in their country.

an email like this, while possibly costing them a chunk of revenue that's negligible in the grand scheme of things but gotta be like 60% of the total orders so far), seems like the kind of thing where sony had to send the message out for appearances, and possibly wont follow through and actually implement a region lock on the discs when it comes to manufacturing what buyers receive later this summer.
