I'm a little confused, was the Zavvi version originally this white version, and now they've changed them all to the Chris Pine black cover, or if you pre-ordered early enough was the white version available through Zavvi?

My guess is, there is no white Zavvi version. Probably a mistake listing / picture.

Zavvi are definitely issuing two versions, one being the white version (the Future Shop/Play artwork), the other one being the black version.

And both versions are also coming out in Japan, so it seems that Zavvi shared the print runs of both with Japanese retailers. In the case of the white version it would seem that they had a smaller percentage of the total amount produced, which is why it sold out so fast, whereas it seems they were able to secure a greater quantity of the black version (which is why it's still available).

Not with the shipping! But seriously, I wouldn't mind terribly if it came without a slip, I think it's an iconic artwork on a steelbook, and it would look incredibly handsome even without the slip.
A slip of course, would be icing on the cake

The black (alternate artwork) version released in Japan comes without a slip, but then Amazon may do something different with the white version.

I sometimes like to order two copies of a steelbook, but Amazon.jp has limited the quantity to 1 per person. Overall, this is good for the collector with a limited run of 1500, but it would be nice to be able to buy 2 copies. Even if you come back later and try to order it, you will be denied (unless of course you're using a friend's account).

The same is true for Amadeus and Goonies, but the strange thing with that is that if you place a separate order later, you can order a second copy, of course the shipping costs are pretty extreme from Japan either way.
