Wouldn't worry, the amount of money it cost for the full remaster of this film farrrrr outweighs a few cinema showings and a limited steelbook. Even if Synapse release a standard version they will be still completely in the red. They have no choice but to licence this to other countries around the globe so expect quite a few different boxsets and versions of this to come. Synapse release by itself and it's limited screenings in the US don't even cover 20% of the remastering costs.

U.K. original release from Jan. 2010 (Cine Express/Nouveaux Pictures) 1 x BD-25. Region Locked. Special Features in SD:-

Later U.K. re-mastered in 2K release from Nov. 2012 (Cult Films . . . same company as above). Same Extras looks like:-

The Synapse 4K re-master will/may/could be different to the Italian 4K re-master in certain as yet unknown ways and it's worth recalling what the gentleman and his team recorded about the restoration:-
" . . . This kind of relates also to a question people have been asking me repeatedly in the last months - and this may be the place and a good opportunity to put things a little into perspective - the question being why we were asked to work on SUSPIRIA given that a Blu-ray distributor in the U.S. is working on the title as well based on (almost) the same material and what the differences are/will be.

The U.S. distributor, I am sure, will do they best to insure that their trusted post-production vendor that was asked by them to do the work on their behalf will produce a good master for their blu-ray edition in the way fans would like to see it with extras and all.

One fundamental difference to the work that we do (TLEFilms FRPS was asked to do the restoration on behalf of the film's world-rights owner) and main aim of it in every respect would be that the priority and eventual outcome/the end result is not a Blu-ray release/master - in fact, this would be "just a by-product", but the very PRESERVATION of this film itself that must reflect the original presentation with precise accuracy well beyond Blu-ray or even 4K UHD quality levels. The reason is to insure that even the generations of viewers in the decades to come and beyond have a reliable, identical image and sound that represent what was made in 1977, be it in theaters, on TV or physical media, regardless of the nature and make.

This means that the workflow, which made use of the 4K anamorphic scan of the (partially very fragile) original picture negative and intermediate negative elements but also exclusively IP sections as well such as titles and parts of the feature did not allow room for interpretations, subjective impressions or deviation from the original of any kind. As a consequence, absolute accuracy in relation to the original creation (in this case the Technicolor Reference Dye Transfer Master Positive of the 1977 theatrical release) of this film production is MANDATORY together with the reliability, responsibility and accountability that come with it.

So, regardless of the subject or looks and whether we like it the way they were made or not, we have to make absolutely sure that the result - the restored presentation - represents the original presentation in every detail. Very intensive research, background knowledge of the photochemical basics and well beyond as well as lots of detailed knowledge of the various stages of production/post-production and the chemical changes the materials were exposed to over the decades are, as one would imagine, also key in this equation - and much more.
In the case of SUSPIRIA, the work took more than a year to complete.

This release - v.expensive (4X) when compared to the only other re-mastered in 4K release that I'm aware of (Italian release from Feb. 2017) - is easily the best SUSPIRIA out there as far as Special Features go . . . and the artwork is pretty nifty too (by Malleus) if you like that style
The print of the steelbook front artwork has been described thus:-
"The variant edition for 'Suspiria' (the final print in the Malleus / Dark City Gallery Dario Argento Series). The print is made up of vibrant reds on black stock and glitter is added to small areas of the piece").

Other Malleus Argento artworks:-

As for the artwork can't help getting an Alphonse Mucha (1860 - 1939) vibe,.

The concept O-card front of course being the same classic original poster image as on the front of the German futurepak from March 2016:-

As for the best release of the bunch - concerning PQ / AQ - there's only one (so far) releasing in Oct. 2017 in Italy - 4K UHD (2160p) 3 discs (1 x BD-66, 1 x BD-50, 1 x CD)

Personally speaking - after looking at screencaps of the available releases I'm in the philistine camp as I prefer the boosted contrast of the CultFilms edition compared to the soft, milky look of the newer 4K re-mastered release from Italy.

I cant get both Synapse and UHD at the mo. Already got the Italian blu.
I might get the UHD once I see screens and reviews.
Who knows may end up selling Synapse HDN on here if it comes to that.

4K is really about HDR and other technologies that are trying to boost upon that. Dolby Vision etc. not just 2160p imho

In the case of Suspiria ... this is not your typical blockbuster in that "hey make it a good looking picture" the more iconic draws to it is the soundtrack and the aesthetics of the colours etc.

That said ...... who would be the ultimate JUDGE and JURY to what is the right colours for this? Any random post house who has a talented guy doing it ... or...

"Synapse Release - Synapse Films has created the ultimate special edition of SUSPIRIA with the supervision and approval of the film's Director of Photography, Luciano Tovoli"

listen from 51 minute mark and Don May of Synapse chat (long) goes on to explain many reasons of why I believe this is likely the best we'll ever see. Completely restored, material from many studios, Tovoli involved giving his interpretation of what it should actually look like.

This is easily the best transfer restoration for this film, but it came at a high cost. So costly that Synapse and the rights owners will definitely have to look at licencing it out to cover costs.

sorry I'm a bit confused. is the variant a separate release or is it part of the ones linked for purchase?

Sorry for any misunderstanding.
The grey artwork is actually the original with the red being a variant. Both hand made silkscreen prints - the latter, as can be seen, the artwork chosen for the front of this steelbook.

Both posters are from 2011 - 2013 by the artist Malleus who created 9 posters - plus variants - in collaboration with Dark City Gallery celebrating the best known films of Dario Argento.
Print set comprised TENEBRAE, FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET, INFERNO, THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, OPERA (aka TERROR AT THE OPERA), PHENOMENA (aka CREEPERS), DEEP RED and SUSPIRIA:-

The other artwork on the steelbook and O-ring:

- Inside by Chris MacGibbon (famous for his 11 retro/fake horror film VHS covers from a couple of years ago)
- Back of O-ring by the Colombian illustrator Juan Jose Caldarriaga

Would have been cool this as the 4 disc SUSPIRIA definitive release (1 x 4K UHD, 2 x BD-50 + 1 x CD) but as Synapse have already pointed out this release cost them 3x what they normally pay for a release I'm guessing that the 4K was not doable for financial reasons (even though it will have been released before this package).

. . . and while Dario Argento is one of the most well-known Italian horror film directors mention must be made of Tobe Hooper who died on Saturday August 26, 2017. RIP.

Cultfilms UK have just announced a UK 4K restoration release and will be on all formats including 4K UHD
It's unlikely that Cultfilms will do a steelbook

Details below

SUSPIRIA...like you've never experienced it!

CultFilms is honoured to present the 4K restored version of Dario Argento’s horror masterpiece SUSPIRIA!

We will distribute our 4K restoration of SUSPIRIA – made under the watchful eye of Dario Argento - on UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and in cinemas…and orchestrate the ‘UK Tour of Suspiria 4K’, which we are coordinating with several venues across the country next month.

Our SUSPIRIA tour is due to conclude with a very special event in London: an evening with Dario Argento, featuring a Q&A with the maestro himself and a presentation of the film.

The restoration has also been selected to screen in the prestigious Cult strand of this year’s BFI London Film Festival.

CultFilms specialises in distributing the finest art-house world cinema and the best cult classics. Born from the fusion of Nouveaux Pictures and Argent Films, two long standing pioneering world cinema labels established in the 90s, with over a quarter century of curating experience, CultFilms specialises in restoring and releasing renowned classics and little known gems to discerning audiences on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, television, and in cinemas.

In 2016 we presented, along with Italian partners, the 4K restoration of THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS at the Venice Film Festival where the film had originally won the Golden Lion. The 4K exhibition of THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS will launch next month at the Barbican in London, followed by screenings across the country. The film will be released as physical media from its 4K source as a hardback bound ‘media-book’. This special CultFilms edition will feature essays and unique period photographs.

We will shortly announce our future 4K restoration plans … so keep an eye out for more thrills!

What would you guys recommend as a protector for this particular release with the “o-card”? Is that a pet slip or just a thin fullslip?
