Per the Digitalbits:

To start, it appears that we’re really finally going to get James Cameron’s The Abyss on Blu-ray. Speaking at Comic-Con on a panel celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Aliens, the director revealed of The Abyss: “We’ve done a [new] wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it’s going to look insanely good,” Cameron said. “We’re going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time.” He confirmed that it’s likely due in 2017, and the fact that an HDR pass is being done too strongly suggests that a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version will be released at the same time. I'll believe it when I'll have both of them in my own hands…
been reading/hearing false promises for too long now...

Yeah, the fact of the matter is that Cameron oversees every Blu/4K release of his films and he's just a tad busy at the moment with four Avatar sequels (plus all the promotion for Alita and then the new Terminator). Avatar 2 & 3 are in 2021/2022, and then Avatar 4 & 5 are in 2024/2025. That leaves 2023 as a maybe year for us to see The Abyss and True Lies on 4K UHD...

Unless he's promoting Alita 2 at that time.

Cameron is too much of a control freak. I get it that its your films and you want them looking the best .... but dude let it hit blu-ray by the techs who have done the transfers and years later when you actually decide to put the time in release the Director Approved Editions. Instead you let fans of the films have nothing, lose interest, and allow others to bootleg. You're doing no favors to anyone except yourself. Waiting a few years when there is a new medium, fine.... I'm a big advocate of not rushing quality. However we're talking 10+ years of blu-ray.
