Comedy. It did win a Globe for that category after all.

Well I'm no expert on the "correct" terminology of film genres but Sci-fi was my initial educated guess... There are of course elements of "comedy" and I suppose "drama" so a mix of all these genres I guess

That film is neither a comedy or a drama. It's a Ridley Scott film. A much more important genre.....

They gave it the "comedy" award because they had already made their choice for the drama award.
This was their their backhanded way of of giving The Martian an award. They wanted to recognize it even if it didn't fit the catagory. It screws the real comedy movies, but gives them a way to honor that movie.
It's like Jethro Tull getting best Heavy Metal album. It was their only avenue left to give them an award.
