French releases are almost as bad as german ones :(

Upside down spine title
G1 size
Too much lettering all over the cover

Absolutely rancid compared to the clean zavvi release. I only have 1 french steelbook so far and its not looking great for any more besides hot shots 1 & 2 :(

You can't generalise a whole country's Steelbook releases. There have been a lot of great French Steelbooks and very few of their releases are actually G1. I don't know where this assumption comes from, but it is wrong.

Most of the french Studio Canal Ssteelbook releases were quite nice, just for example, Ninja Assassin, Terminator 2 or Green Zone have no printed banner, G2 sized, removable J-Card and inside artwork... So I expect this one to be the same...

Warner Bros is the only French editor that releases G1-sized steelbooks, gamesgaryjp ;).

I can list them to you right now :

  1. Clash of the Titans.
  2. Contagion.
  3. Dark Shadows.
  4. Des hommes et des Dieux.
  5. Final Destination 5.
  6. Ghost Rider - Spirit of Vengeance.
  7. Green Lantern.
  8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I.
  9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.
  10. Inception.
  11. J. Edgar.
  12. Journey to the Center of the Earth 2.
  13. Or Noir.
  14. Sex & the City 2.
  15. Sherlock Holmes.
  16. Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows.
  17. Sucker Punch.
  18. The Dark Knight Rises.
  19. The Town.
  20. Wrath of the Titans.

And when you have 8 of them like I do, you just put them in the corner of a shelf and together they don't look that bad. Besides, they don't have printed back and there is interior artwork, so all in all, they're not the absolute worst ;).

As for the upside down spine title, I for one have always thought of the spines from the rest of the world as the ones being upside down :D.

I'm looking at my library, and it's the exact same thing with new books, old books, comics, dictionaries, it's all "upside down". Maybe it's a French thing, maybe it's because I'm left-handed so I'm a little weird, and it's quite possibly because I'm so used to it but it makes sense to me that you should be able to read the title easily on the spine. I mean, the way it's done, with people having to read the spine from bottom to top, it feels like it's oriented towards the front, imo (I understand what I mean by that), and I like that, the front is what matters.

As for this Place Beyond the Pines steelbook, I must say I like it a lot. I like the shot they chose for the cover, I like the sky in this shot, I like the font, and even if the red lettering is a bit too stark, that doesn't tarnish the whole thing. We don't know yet if the banner will be part of the steelbook or the J-card, from the looks of it it appears to be printed but that won't turn me off this Blu-ray.

I will pick this one up August 20th along with the French Oblivion (10th August) and perhaps the French Grandmaster (4th September). Those are the main French steelbook releases I'm interested in for the next 6-7 weeks — I don't live near an Auchan, and I'm not in France for much longer so I will get another Iron Man 3 steelbook edition.

i really like the artwork, I think it really suits the film. Much better than Canada's ugly ass amaray release, that cover is hideous. Too much text, I agree, but the image they are showing and the colours of the artwork all play a big role in the film

Much better if it's without all the text and the alignment would be higher of Gosling riding the bike...

This is just rubbish...

To be fair to the guy I think he made that comment when the UK art was showing a terrible mockup with a lot of text and quotes all over the front, looked like it was designed by an infant. It looked something like this French one.
