Hello everybody! :) I just had a nice and promising conversation with an employee of TheHutGroup. He said that I could send him a mockup and he'll forward it to Warner Home Video to get some feedback and hopefully bring them to change to front artwork of this. On monday I'll send him my mockup and I thought maybe some ninjas here would also like to try something. I think we shouldn't send them some totally different images and go a bit easy with them. I mean we could be happy if they'd just remove that black banner. What do you think about this? For now I just took the image I posted a couple pages ago and put "The Prestige" on top of it:

For all the Photoshop geeks who'd like to try something different with this or for those who want to see this image in full resolution, here's the link to my Dropbox folder:

If you have some mockups for me, please send me your images in a printable resolution till Sunday evening. And here's the conversation I had with zavvi/TheHut:

Dear zavvi,

I'm a member of the "Hi-Def Ninja" community and therefore I'm following your releases. I'd like to talk about the steelbook release of "The Prestige" and give you our feedback.
Most of us are really happy about the movie itself getting released but disappointed with the front artwork. We think the black banner on the top of the artwork is a bit unnecessary. Noticing that maybe due to the original image used for this (/src/tmdb_poster.jpg), the designer had to crop the bottom of it because of the typeface. Because we all love this movie and we wish that it get's the right treatment I took my time and edited the image used for that front artwork (theprestige_hdn.png).
With this mail I send you a link to my Dropbox folder including all the files I mentioned. We hope that you'll forward this to your colleges responsible for this. We really hope that you take our input positively and once again, thanks a lot.

Hi ...,

Thanks for the email.

I will forward this direct to Warner Home Video for you and try to get some feedback. I understand what you are saying and WHV have changed the sleeve slightly since launch to improve this and it currently looks much better, but I will ask if they can work with your recommendations and improve further.

All artwork ultimately comes from and is agreed by the studios (I wish we did design them all in-house that would be amazing!), we can propose ideas for them to use as we did with The Prestige, but the final artwork is down to the studios and the talent.

Hi ...,

thank you very much for that quick and kind answer!

I just wanted to let you know that the artwork I've send you wasn't meant to be "final". I thought that you have some designers who are responsible for these artworks and I thought maybe I could help them out a little with this image. I had in mind that they would add the title to it and whatever else they like to.

Do you think I could try this myself and you'd forward it then to WHV? Thanks again for your help, I wasn't expecting this.

Hi ...,

You are welcome to mock up a final image for me and I can sent to them to look at.

Always happy to listen to feedback!

Thanks

Unfortunately artwork is final

Feedback below –

“Couldn’t avoid some black on the front. Due mainly to the names of the cast and the from the director of batman begins… had to be on there for contractual reasons”

So nothing Warner can change now as they have to have to have the names on there, otherwise the steelbook would not have been agreed (it has also past the date where amends can be made apparently).

Thanks a lot for your time & feedback on this. Getting any new artwork agreed is a bit of a nightmare really!

Very interesting, mystic artwork.
I never saw this before.
But the black banner is horrible.
It destroys the feeling of the artwork.

Maybe, it looks better when no text is on the front.
Normale im for the title, etc. on the front, but this artwork is not normal, it looks like some strange, mystic pictures. This effect works better with no text.

I really wanna get this movie in steelbook! Too bad that "From the director of Batman Begins" ruined the cover... Such a shame!

But I guess The Prestige isn't considered to be a blockbuster so they needed something on the cover to sell the movie.

This is the frustrating thing, they DON'T need anything there to sell the movie. This won't be in shops so it's not like you're going to be browsing and wondering what the hell the film is. Studios must really think people are thick to do stuff like this on an online only exclusive edition.

Even if they absolutely have to advertise this 'Directed By Director Of...' fact, just show it on one of the mock-ups but state the text won't be on the final product. Not exactly hard.

Or just put it on the j-Card.

Putting the names of the cast and "from the director of batman" had to go on the steelbook it was part of the agreement of the steelbook being released. No cast names = no steelbook

What will ruin the cover is the useless embossed frame, as usual.

Not EVERY steel needs embossing.

I'm getting this because I love the film (Wolverine and Batman going head to head as magicians!) and I can't see another steel of this being released any time soon.

Sorry I must have missed some posts. So this steelbook will have an embossed frame that will cut the names of the cast or the title in half?EEK!
Well, there's possibility that it would happen that way but it won't be the first steelbook, since the Terminator 2: Judgment Day (KimchiDVD Exclusive #1) happened to have the same issue but still looks nice... :) the major issue is The Prestige's cast names are really crowded...

It really wasn't necessary. But I guess it is alright because "Schwarzenegger" is in a bigger font size. If the same frame is on The Prestige steelbook then the border of that frame is likely to be on the names of the cast. With a much smaller font size, there's a chance the names would be distorted.

Who said that?!

I think one of the member on the forum contacted Zavvi and asked if it's possible to remove that black banner and those words and Zavvi got back saying the studio has a contract in place requiring the words "From the Director of Batman Begins" on the front cover.

I believe the post is a couple of pages back.
