For Rocketeer fans like myself, this was an instant classic when it came out in theatres.
The comics were a little edgier, and I blame Disney for toning down the racy scenes, but Dave Stevens was a master storyteller and he was very closely involved with the film.
Yes, it has a cult following. It also has a huge comic fanbase. In fact, I have never met anyone in comics who is not a fan. The only ones who were not fans were people who had never heard of it or read it.
The movie had flaws, but overall it is a great ride. The dialog is crisp and the sets are meticulously detailed -- just like the comic. It is almost a period movie because it captures the time period so well. It is not the slam-bang action movie like IRON MAN, but if you go in with the expectation of a simpler time where something extraordinary happens to a group of average folk, you should enjoy the movie.
The SteelBook art, while predictable, is timeless and has the most popular poster that people associate with the film.
