What attracted you to SteelBook collecting?

I would guess that the majority of members here on HDN are here for the same reason - Because you're SteelBook collectors - But what attracted you to SteelBook collecting in the first place?

Obviously nowadays SteelBook collecting is more popular than ever, with a vast back catalogue available, and many frequent new releases. Scanavo themselves have also improved their products over the years, meaning the SteelBooks being released now are some of the most beautiful and of the highest quality possible!

I first got into SteelBook collecting back in 2004 when Sony released Killzone for the PS2. I had always favoured collector's editions over regular releases, and the Killzone SteelBook appealed to me as it was similar to the Halo 2 MetalPak, but sleeker and more refined. The SteelBook design was more popular than the Halo 2 / Doom 3 MetalPak design, and so became the primary choice for publishers. Little did I know that ten years later the SteelBook brand would become as successful as it has!

Then Dvd SteelBooks started to appear. I distinctly remember Steven Spielberg's Duel being one of the earliest released in the UK, along with the FOX / MGM Cinema Reserve wave. Dvd's had only just gained popularity, and SteelBook releases were few and far between. Like with video games, I preferred to buy various Dvd collector's editions, but it wouldn't be until the release of Appleseed when I began to collect Dvd SteelBook releases

Shortly afterwards, FOX / MGM had started releasing the Definitive Edition wave of SteelBooks. It was around this time that I started back-tracking and picking up as many Dvd SteelBook releases as I could. There weren't too many, so I felt that a full set of UK SteelBook releases was achievable. However, some of the earlier releases and Cinema Reserve releases were already becoming quite difficult to get hold of, and I was informed that 1900 had been recalled due to an error with the disc. Every other week I would spend several hundred Pounds in HMV buying only SteelBooks and CE's!

I never really trusted online retailers, and preferred to see an item before buying. I'd been burned before and had some nasty experiences buying online, and boycotted everything except eBay (where I could converse first-hand with a seller). PLAY.com had several exclusive Dvd releases during this time, such as Iron Man and Transformers. I missed both, and refused to pay eBay scalper prices. This was a major turning point for me, as I was fed-up of missing exclusives and having to rely on them appearing on eBay for a good price, so I bit the bullet and vowed to pre-order every future SteelBook release!

After snatching my local HMV of all the previous Dvd SteelBooks I could, I turned to online shopping. HMV was my primary choice of retailer, as I was content with their packaging, and they had the best returns policy. I absolutely abhorred PLAY.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Zavvi. However, PLAY.com redeemed themselves in 2012 when they improved their service dramatically - What a shame that they then bowed out of retail nine months later

When the HD era began, I sat on the fence waiting to see who would be the victor - HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I wasn't going to invest in one or the other until I knew which would survive, but I had always preferred Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Sony's release of the PS3 concreted the success of Blu-Ray, and shortly afterwards we would see the first Blu-Ray SteelBooks!

By this time I was already established as a serious SteelBook collector. I had an almost complete UK set of Dvd SteelBooks, and was pre-ordering all future Blu-Ray SteelBook releases. Like with Dvd SteelBooks, the first two or three years were slow, with British SteelBook releases few and far between - Unlike other countries such as Germany or The Netherlands, where they were significantly more popular than they were here

I had already been picking up various early Blu-Ray CE's when the Sweeney Todd SteelBook came along. Blu-Ray was still an expensive format at the time, and I seem to remember the first Blu-Ray SteelBooks costing me between £25-£30 each! In a way, I'm glad that there weren't too many Blu-Ray SteelBook releases, as they would have been very costly indeed!

Having been a SteelBook collector for nearly a decade now, and having maintained an almost complete collection of UK releases, I feel somewhat compelled to carry on. Quitting now would be out of the question, as it would be a shame to have dedicated so many years into a collection to just stop dead. With the deluge of SteelBook releases on the horizon (over 55 UK releases in the next four months alone!), it does feel quite overwhelming at times, but I always seem to find a way to cope. I just wish that Zavvi would spread their exclusive releases apart more, and take into account what else is being released in the same month

Until about a week ago I had never bought an Amaray Blu-Ray release, despite owning over 300 Blu-Ray releases! It appears that digital downloads are taking over, and premium packaging (such as SteelBooks and DigiBooks) are becoming the norm. Amaray releases are typically budget products now, and the recent summer sales have allowed me to cherry-pick my favourites so I can enjoy the films at a low price without having to open my SteelBook collection.

I collect SteelBooks for the joy of collecting, rather than for a film to watch. I thrive on the thrill of the chase, rather than the kill, and enjoy hunting down the few that I am still missing. I still believe that a complete UK set is achievable, and I have met several other collectors here on HDN who are aiming for the same goal. The majority of SteelBook titles I own I would probably never have picked up if it wasn't for the fact that I wanted a complete set, but I am happy with my collection, and it's something interesting to talk to friends and other collectors about

What's your story?

That sums it up pretty well for me, although I am not aiming onto a specific country when it comes to collecting. I go for the movies I like but also for the special ones that are beeing announced like Kimchi releases and Blufans. I am not gonna buy all Zavvi releases, because there are som old catalogue titles and the same with german releases. Trying to sell off the "boring" editions.

I also collect the special editions like Walking Dead Seaon 2 Zombie Head, because I like to mix it up in my mancave:)

The fact they are more superior looking than standard amarays. The feel of them, i.e the embossed letters , glossy look, or a matte finish. Of course the artwork is well.

That's an interesting story Heche, I'm surprised you haven't bought any Amaray releases before. I've always bought the films I want and a lot of the time that means Amaray only so there is no choice. I do think packaging matters a lot to collectors like us but you might be shocked at what percentage of sales are special editions. A lot of people are happily buying regular Blu-rays even at full price and don't care one bit about what packaging the film comes in! I feel it makes the release that bit more special when it comes in limited edition packaging.:)

I love the feel and the look Steelbooks have. Although I don't open all the ones I have, it's still great cherishing them. I started collecting BDs and Steelbooks (which I got to know little before) last October, so I guess I'm behind schedule a bit. Even so I try getting the ones that appeal more to me either because of the movie or the design and everything =P.

As a matter or fact, my second BD movie was already a Steelbook :scat:. I bought Senna Amaray just to test my PS3 playing videos straight from a BD, then I saw The Dark Knight (DE) for a good price and got it, the rest is history.

I don't know what attracted me to them really. I bought a Blu-ray and was unexpectedly sent the Steelbook version (Sweeney Todd). I bought a couple more (Green Zone and Robin Hood) and that was it, I was hooked. Now I can't stop buying them. :emb:

I'm sitting at 34 steels at present - I used to go credit card comatose over standard blu rays but sold them all and fully raised funds for my soon to be purchased PS4 & Xbox ONE. In order to prevent myself going Blu crazy again, I've limited my collecting to Blu Steelbooks released in the United Kingdom only (it's the only way I can prevent my itchy trigger finger going maniac on eBay).
I've only been going 3some weeks but things are moving along rather briskly - I knew I was in trouble when I ordered 200 protective steelbook sleeves just in case...

Oh, and I'm too scared to check what I've got on pre-order :wtf:

The Marvel movies for me. Enjoyed them so much and put into google "avengers steelbook collection"

I was hooked from that moment on!

I started collecting movies (in general) one and a half years ago, after already being a collector of vinyl records for almost 15 years before... (that passion came along with my dj job).

At first i didnt know where and how to start, i bought many cheap dvds in the beginning because i only wanted to have the movie ready to watch whenever i wanted to. As i found out about how much more long term value collectors and limited editions have, i stopped buying cheap amarays and now starting to buy more and more steelbooks. I liked digibooks and boxsets more than steelbook packaging until some weeks ago.
Now, what got me into steelbook collecting? First place: this forum here. Maybe it's not as harmful for your health, but quite the same expensive as developing a crack addiction.

It all begun 2009 when I went to BB and saw a Wall-E in a different case than the amaray case and brought it. Next day A Bug's life and Monsters Inc. and then stopped cause I've seen that nobody in my country was interested. Saw for more than a year all of the Disney's collection without been sold in the shelves. My favorite movies are the sci-fi ones. Have less than 40 SB cause I got the ones that I really deserves to be watch over and over again, cause my wife is my best $ adviser.

Bad habbit from collecting DVD Steels & LEs from back in the day which automatically carried on to BDs when HD media/format came out :p

I've always been a big movie fan,but was unwilling to replace my big collection of DVDs to blu-rays.i was always happy with the picture quality of DVDs.then I went to a friends house one day,who I had not seen for a very long time.he took me into his movie room.standing on the side was a collection of blu-ray steelbooks,on them plastic holders.Instantly I was amazed with how smart the artwork was,and the overall look and design of the steelbooks.I told him I had never watched a blu-ray before, only seen them running as demos in shops. He said to me "mate you don't know what you been missing",and with that he put on his copy of District 9 steelbook, and I was blown away.
The combination of the quality of blu-ray,and the awesome steelbook cases has had me addicted ever since.
I so do luv my steelbook collection, but it can be a very expensive hobby, and sometimes I do wish I had never gone round to see my friend, and saved myself a good few thousand pounds, and counting.but everyone has to have at least one addiction, and this is mine:thumbs:

initially it was the artwork. from what I remember best buy would always place under the picture, limited run, so obviously only a certain number per store. then I checked out ebay where I found different versions of the same movie. I was hooked, even the ones from different countries were limited. Gives me the feeling that I have something that is scarce.

Art on metal

I had been at the BR forum a few times when I saw the "better international blu-ray" thread. Out of 3 titles that I wanted to buy, 1 was available in steelbook, so I decided to try it, just to see what it was like. After that I could not imagine buying just amarays. I never intended to have a movie collection. I have a collectible packaging collection. I would never buy them just for the movies. I'm not that into movies.

I love the way glossy art looks on metal. Occasionally flat art is good too. I love the way the boxes open and close. I love disc art. I appreciate inside art. I love clean backs. I love sliding the steel and the j-card into the protective hard plastic sleeve. I worry a lot when I try to open a sealed steelbook. I save the stickers inside the case. I closely inspect the steel when it arrives. It's quite the ritual.

In first Place-it was the Artwork-it was something "different".
Then i saw the first "lenti" at MM.I think it was Avatar. Since then i`m addicted to the lenti Steels(as you can see in my Galerie:D).
