What if steelbooks replaced Amarays?

What if their popularity got to the point where retailers no longer carried Amaray?

Personally, I think if steelbooks became the norm, *HOPEFULLY* it would result in retailer exclusives that drove where you got it based on the artwork.

dfoles, whatever you've been smoking, pass it here bro ;)

As much as I LOVE steelbooks, I also love picking cheap amarays up for 2 or 3 quid.

If steels replaced amarays, be prepared for some pony artwork!

Edit: currently being proven by Zavvi releasing 2 a day... Some shockers in there

I think if everything became steel books it would remove a huge part of their exclusivity and collectibility.
What I envision though would be retailer exclusive artwork or exclusives, if steelbooks were the norm, the manufacturing process might become slightly more economic, or maybe they'd allow for lower print runs for specific retailer releases.

In the world I see, Amarays would exist solely for cheap movies, B releases or re-re-rereleases

See above answer regarding artwork.

dfoles dude ..... why you letting the secret out!? ;)

Oops, I forgot in our extensive back and forth about this exact subject that you asked me not to let the cat out of the bag. Sorry Wreck!

It can't happen just because most of major companies just want to get the cheapest price and a piece of plastic with a little leaflet is ten thousand miles cheaper than a steelbook ;)

I'm all for it. I buy steels only because amarays look like trash, "rarity" or "collectability" have zero meaning for me. If anything, steels are more expensive/less likely to be discounted if runs are more limited. If it would mean that we could get every single movie in steel format at the price of today's amarays or only a fraction higher (for the amount of difference in production costs), I'll be first in line to sign up. :)

Have you ever heard of a monopoly? If Scanavo was the only company producing packaging for blurays, then they could easily raise the price. There would be no reason for them to lower the price, since they hold the steelbook patent.

Competition is what keeps prices low.

This would never happen, the ratio of Steelbooks to amarays is very different. Steelbooks still have a relatively small market despite becoming more popular. I'm guessing the print run for amarays on some major films must be up to a million copies. Compare that to a 4,000 steelbook print run and you can see how small it is. Steelbooks appeal as they are more exclusive/ limited than amarays, if they were where everywhere then they would lose a lot of their desirability.

So just like it is with Amaray now, right?

Amaray is the standard now, they hold the monopoly in the movie business, yet the costs are still down.

If steelbook were the standard, that wouldn't mean it would be the only option. You'd still have all the other metal packaging that's being made right now as well as digibooks, digipacks etc... The only difference would be that the packaging being used most commonly would be a different type than now. And yes, moving production from a few selected titles in a few selected countries to every release in every country would bring the costs down, there's no doubt about it.

Well they already have their version of "amarays" as well:

Although I don't really like them, the discs are super hard to get out of the case.
