What would be your perfect collectors edition?

I have often thought long and hard about this. I finally settled on a collector's edition of 'Zatoichi' (2003). I would love a glossy, platinum steelbook housed in a red lacquered full slip case.

That's one film that desperately needs a new scan and grade. The blu ray is looking rough as heck now. I watched it on for the the first time again in several years last Saturday. Ugh. It needs some love I agree.

I remember first watching it at the cinema. What an amazing experience.

Yep. I do love the Kitano adaptation. I wish they'd done more to be fair.
I love Zatoichi as a character.
Have you seen the any of the 26 films with the OG Zatoichi, Shintaro Katsu?
I'd recommend those to anyone who enjoys the character. Yes, they're old and some are filler, but they are in general all very entertaining and Shintaro absolutely nails that character, with quite a few of the films having an overall story arc and recurring characters.
Shintaro has created one of Japan's most enduring heroes. Each performance just adds more depth and layers to the role. Fantastic stuff. They all pretty much 70-80 mins too. Not much longer than a episode of TV.

i anticipate you may have this already, but if you don't yet have the Criterion collection for the original films - and speaking of perfect collections - it's one of the nicest non-steel sets i own. it's still available here and elsewhere, plus it does sometimes come up on sale (which is when i was lucky enough to get it). agree with you on Shintaro absolutely nailing the character.

This might be even better, is that the entire Zaitochi collection?

That's the original actor, yep.
The Criterion set is definitely the one to get though.

Thats the beauty.
It's a fantastic set. So well packaged. It's also one of my favourites.

There's only one thing that's missing from the Criterion edition and that's the final film with the original actor from 1989. Shintaro directed it as his swansong.
Again, I'm no expert, but I'm confused as to why Criterion couldn't secure that one.

all good, but especially agree on the No Country... and Bad Times..., two sensational films that have not really yet had the premium treatment.
