I have often thought long and hard about this. I finally settled on a collector's edition of 'Zatoichi' (2003). I would love a glossy, platinum steelbook housed in a red lacquered full slip case.

I remember first watching it at the cinema. What an amazing experience. That's one film that desperately needs a new scan and grade. The blu ray is looking rough as heck now. I watched it on for the the first time again in several years last Saturday. Ugh. It needs some love I agree.
I'd love that treatment for a lot of directors. Imagine a huge John Carpenter 4K boxset? The entire Todd Solodz filmography in a massive Collectors edition box set, like what Criterion kinda did for Wes Anderson
And I want a Greg Araki box set in 4K, they recently announced Mysterious Skin in 4K, but I need his entire filmography

I've seen the first few of the original movies, which I loved.Yep. I do love the Kitano adaptation. I wish they'd done more to be fair.
I love Zatoichi as a character.
Have you seen the any of the 26 films with the OG Zatoichi, Shintaro Katsu?
I'd recommend those to anyone who enjoys the character. Yes, they're old and some are filler, but they are in general all very entertaining and Shintaro absolutely nails that character, with quite a few of the films having an overall story arc and recurring characters.
Shintaro has created one of Japan's most enduring heroes. Each performance just adds more depth and layers to the role. Fantastic stuff. They all pretty much 70-80 mins too. Not much longer than a episode of TV.

This is not the Zaitochi you are referring to right, just became available to pre order in FranceI have often thought long and hard about this. I finally settled on a collector's edition of 'Zatoichi' (2003). I would love a glossy, platinum steelbook housed in a red lacquered full slip case.

This might be even better, is that the entire Zaitochi collection?i anticipate you may have this already, but if you don't yet have the Criterion collection for the original films - and speaking of perfect collections - it's one of the nicest non-steel sets i own. it's still available here and elsewhere, plus it does sometimes come up on sale (which is when i was lucky enough to get it). agree with you on Shintaro absolutely nailing the character.
