Why do you you/don't you buy Steelbooks?

This is me too. I don't know why I buy them really, I just started buying them and now I can't stop and it's been like this for three years now

I collect because I prefer steelbooks over amarays. I also open most of my steels as I dont see the need to keep them sealed rare or not. They are for my enjoyment. I have many sealed but that because a couple of yrs back I went into a conversion mode selling off amarays I had already replaced to fund purchasing more steelbooks.

Well, I have always been destined to be a true collector.

When I bought DVDs back in the old days I always looked for special and limited editions, with bonus discs and special artwork etc.
When steelbooks came along I began to buy those (I got an Iron Man DVD steelbook which was my very first steel), and now I can't stop buying!

I'm not only buying steels though, but also digibooks and digipacks, I just love to have something special to go with the movie that I like - if it's for the art, the packaging, the bonus discs or whatever. I will find a reason! haha

I open mine when I watch the movie, and generally only buy favorite or high interest films for which I'd like to own some special edition of some kind, like a Steelbook or Limited Edition. Re-watchability and art matter to me the most. If I have no interest whatsoever in a film, I pass, regardless of rarity, art, etc. I am not interested in keeping things sealed for the sake of keeping them sealed, but completely understand why people do. Occasionally I am roped in based on who is in the movie, or the art, but those instances are few and far between.

I'll refer to my own post. I buy them for several reason, but the main one is definitely the first one. I love displaying the special ones. Braveheart, for example...is the one film i have watched the most. It packs significant value for me, in terms of being a movie buff, as well as a personal history behind it.

So, the Play UK release for Braveheart is one of my most prized possessions, and will never be opened, or leave my house.

To me, they're great for several reasons. For films i really enjoy, i like to have something "special" to display, for myself and others to look at, and talk about.

Besides that, it's nice to collect something from a variety of different countries. I have been all over the world, and i have small things from each of the countries i have visited. Steelbooks allow me to do the same, without actually having to go there, lol.

Last but not least...i do tend to invest in potential sale / trade material when it comes to highly anticipated releases. I do it with steelbooks, Korean imports and even cars. Funding a hobby by utilizing certain "side-effects" of said hobby, is a beautiful thing.

I buy the odd one like Django Unchained as I wanted to see it so for about £7 more than the 2 tickets to the cinema and £3 more than the plastic case from work I saved money in the long run .

Then thire are the ones that I just adore the film and the will upgrade to steelies are just . Like Hot Fuzz ,Shaun Of The Dead, Watchmen (Play I don't like the future stop one).

The old but Goldie's I will go for a steelbook IF it has only just come out on Blu Ray Jaws, Roger Rabbit, Finding Nemo, Little Mermaid.

I was just thinking about this a day or so ago.

I came to the conclusion that I actually buy steelbooks only because I hate how cheap and uninspired amarays look and feel.

Good thread, I think to myself about this sometimes.....I think it probably has to do with the fact that I love movies and I love collecting neat/cool looking/limited things

I've been a long time collector of Sideshow/Hot Toys figures/statues cause they are usually from movies I like and they are limited and look awesome

Steelbooks are probably the same thing. Combination of movies I like and how cool a steel looks just makes me want to have it to add to my collection and proudly display them

If it's a movie I love, sometimes I'll just buy the steel anyways even if the artwork isn't that great. On the other hand if the artwork is spectacular or the steel is very collectible I might just plunge and get it anyways cause of it's collectibility and limited nature

Like with anything I'm sure we all have our reasons for this hobby haha

Well... it started for me when I was trying to upgrade my DVD collection to Blu-ray... which was already costing a bit, then I got into steelbooks, so now I am upgrading my blu-rays to steelbooks and the vicious cycle continues.

This is a VERY costly hobby, but I suppose just about any hobby is, unless you collect bellybutton lint!

I love movies and pop culture in general. Steelbooks are just an extension of that for me.

can some1 tell me how it comes together that most people say that they don't care about print runs and on the other hand steels like Jack Reacher ES getting sold out so quick? why paying 50bucks for the same cover you can get for 10bucks from other retailers if people have no interest in limitation at all?

UK Steels

Just a question for the community to discuss.

With the UK being over saturated with steels, do you ladies and gents feel this is healthy for collectors OR is this kind of ruining the thrill of collecting with so many releases from one nation / region?

This seems it might get worse with Entertainment Store and HMV getting back in the loop of releasing exclusives and with amazon UK chipping in here and there.

With all the announcements so far this year thus far, the average is slightly more than a steelbook release every week with some more blockbusters yet to be announced.

id rather live with Entertainment store and HMV and lose zavvi to be honest but thats just me and i know zavvi is good for people overseas.

I like HMV when they had an online store. They did ship internationally but didn't combine ship. I hope they don't go down the same line as Zavvi and start doing catalogue releases and concentrate more on NEW movies only.
Some of the Zavvi exclusives are just meh.... IMO. But I guess they are catering to local tastes at the same time.
