Why do you you/don't you buy Steelbooks?

new collector here but i am already feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of releases and thats probably why you have such limited release steelbooks like gijoe still available the whole point is to be rare

I'm more into getting specific movies only and staying away from the gluttony of steels that are being released. I'd love to get some of the steels Zavvi are putting out, but $25 a steel for a catalog title is a little on the expensive side, than Asian steels are even more expensive, so I'm going to be choosy on what I actually want in my collection.

It´s not the same as it was before....I´ll second that. One of the reasons I got involved in this was the game/hunt for steels that were issued in limited print runs. That part of collecting is over in some terms. Yes, blufans, kimchi, es are making an effort but when zavvi just wants to massproduce I tend to loose interest. I think they (zavvi) got a bit of the message when they decided on print runs of Junglebook and Little Mermaid. I still think its around 10k each and now their coming Disney/Pixar will be 3-4k.

I´d prefer more thought in the process of selecting the film, selecting the art and the way the steel (and slip) should be.

I´ve been thinking about it a while and I will change the way I collect steels, I wil also look more into special editions and I have recently bought some mondo posters. For me it´s more about the feeling to collect...it´s boring if it gets too easy. Does this makes any sense at all? :)

Couldn't agree more with that statement.

I have only bought one UK steel this year and that was Argo as I did not have the FS version, plus loved the film.

Only collecting Blufans and certain Asian Steels now.

Also exclusives like Lawrence Of Arabia, China, are always high on my want list..!!! ;)

Thing is, do you OPEN them? or just collect sealed/mint ones for display?

Hi Ricardo, glad you're here. The collectible world went crazy with releases last year. Many steelbooks and other films were available for the first time and box sets of films new to blu. This year has been the same thing. After Xmas I felt good that I got into collecting before big wave, not expecting another big wave this year. Now I am starting to think about how many of these I really want to collect. It comes down to cool art and a good movie. Then I'll jump in. Limited releases like KR/JP/TW or blufans also get serious consideration.

I saw the prequel Oz at the grocery store, an amaray with the lenticular full slip that blufans is getting, and I had to wonder why I want to pay $60 for a steelbook of the same movie. I haven't canceled my preorder, but it makes me think.

cant agree more. Some releases are so expensive and for what ? I personally think some slipcovers are more eye popping and gorgeous than some steels... like oz and oblivion for recent ones. The market is so saturated that these days you have to be very very selective unless you got major bank roll

I have made the concious decision to cut back on my Steelbook spending as it was getting out of hand. I have saved over £350 over the last 2 months. I canceled about 20 catalogue titles on Wednesday, keeping only both Die Hards, 28 Days Later, Tron, Thor, Captain America and Transformer ROTF. Everything else was jettisoned. I'm concentrating only on new releases now and only if they hold value to me, ie Iron Man 3 amazon.it rather than Zavvi. Zavvi has ruined Steelbook collecting with their blatant greed. They would Steelbook a cow turd if they could. I intend to control this before it controls me.

I feel the same way. Cancelled all orders with them. Being super selective now and mostly after new releases and some Asian exclusives. Collecting much more enjoyable that way.

Zavvi haven't ruined Steelbook collecting any more than Play.com did. Play started it, Zavvi carried on where they left off. That said I am finding the number of releases overwhelming. Over the last few days I have seriously being considering cancelling quite a few pre-orders, especially in September/October.

Not dead just become stagnate.

Zavvi are releasing far too many steels now and flooding the market and another problem far to many companies called steelbook this & steelbook that on Amazon and Play and eBay flogging them for stupid prices, Every tom dick and harry and their cat have now thought dude this is a great way to make money and started buying 10 of everything to try and resell.

Problem in this is when they pay £15 for a steel and then sell it for £23 take your fees, shipping and packing materials off you made £15 the days of steels soaring in value like Iron man are now long gone thanks to scalpers lets hope people jog on and scalp something else and Zavvi slow the hell down on the steelbook releases.

Not dead, but the prices and the fact far too many are being made has taken the shine off the hobby. I would rather have a limited special edition now over a Steelbook.

Zavvi are already dropping prices for some of there steels some as much as half just weeks after there released, im sure they will slow down with how many they release or there going to need more space to store all the unsold steelbooks they have. It was fun when they first started but now they have flooded the market with in my opinion some very poor and cheap looking steelbooks for some average movies. You can get most of there releases cheaper on ebay under retail or in the sales, not much point in pre ordering zavvi releases anymore apart from the odd one that sells out and even then they come back in stock again anyway.
