Wasn't sure where else to post this.

Not the end of the world, you gotta pay for it eventually anyway and Zavvi's cancellation procedure is nice an easy so meh whatever

I very rarely use them due to the lack of free shipping anyway so not going to impact me all that often

I think it matters with editions that never see the light of day though. Seven 4k collectors for example. You'd be pissed paying up front and a year or so later it's cancelled. I seem to recall we all know it was cancelled long before retailers did. Sometimes you can forget you've pre ordered things... like for instance if anyone has a pre order for the 4k steelbook of 28 Days Later. If I had ordered it, I would be pretty chill about it, having not paid up front. However most Ninjas are aware the shortcomings if they were to try and produce a 4k of that film. If you'd paid for that up front like 6 months ago, you'd be pretty pissed with no release date yet. Admittedly it's a fairly unique case of a studio thinking they could do a 4k without actually having a plan for it (pretty obvious now).

However the blueprint is there for companies to tie your money up in releases that take that long to even produce a release date. I personally wouldn't go down the route just because makes it far more difficult to monitor. It also almost feels like we as collectors would be further propping up a diminishing market imo.

Maybe but I'm not keen on trusting them with my money for months at a time, if I'm paying in advance I also expect a higher standard of service than they've been delivering too.

Oooof. I only tend to order from Zavvi when they have exclusives, but ANY retailer thinking of taking this approach needs to have confirmed artwork at the time of preorder.

and this.

So long as easy cancellation procedure, just a few clicks away and I dont have a problem. I would prefer confirmed artwork, but I suppose so long as I can cancel then its ok. In a weird way that actually might help and speak volumes. I mean if you got a bunch of cancellation payouts because of rubbish art then finally the number crunchers can see what people didnt like with a true currency amount tied to that decision.

I guess that's a fair point, any time you trust a company with your money you're doing so while running the risk of them heading into Administration or something and you losing your money for good. Didn't really look at it from that POV

Nah don’t agree. If you're having a big month of pre orders with scattered release dates I don’t want to pay up front, simple. Especially with the no artwork confirmed thing or unknown release dates. They shouldn’t change it. It’s one the main things I like about them, HMV and Amazon and the main reason I’d use those 3 specifically. Luckily don’t pre order much anymore anyway but there is the odd month that creeps up where I do. And yeah that too, it’s Zavvi, I don’t want them having my money for months and months. Some things like the universal and WB collectors editions go up for 6/7/8 months before we get any release date or artwork confirmation.

Pretty much my position on this. I live by pre-ordering without payment up front ( except for premiums ) and then as details and dates are finalised nearer to release I can budget better for what I can afford. Really don't like this idea at all as well as them having my money for god knows what amount of time for some releases. Thankfully I don't order much from Zavvi these days I only currently have that 28 Days Later Steelbook on pre-order and if I'd paid for that upfront I'd be pretty pissed of at the moment. I love HMV so they better not start this **** or I will be inconvenienced in this hobby.

Zavvi seems to be heading down a one way road right now. Their exclusive Untouchables Beta Axe premium isn't selling out at all...well their single steelbook has but not the other two sets at £59.99 or £99.99.
Pre orders are what - three months or two months minimum wait for major studio new and catalogue titles?
Nah, man. My Zavvi ordering has slowed to once or twice in the last 12 months. This isn't making me want to pre order anything from them anymore.

Probably because the artwork is sh**. My last order was more than 3 years ago.

Not good.. already considering cancelling my Red Carpet due to its negative elements and now they dump this on us. Using the excuse that it deters re-sellers from buying multiple copies doesn't cut it with me. If scalpers want to buy multiple copies they still will, as they have the same option as everyone else to cancel at a later date. Tired of retailers sugar coating their underhanded practices as 'benefits to customers'....
