The Other Guys Blu-ray Review

P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) and Christopher Danson (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) are the superstars of the NYPD police station. Both detectives are revere by their peers; they are everything all other detectives aspire to be. Well, not by everyone. Mismatched detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hitz (Mark Wahlberg) are being relegated to a desk job away from all the action. Allen is an always-professional cop who follows the rules and Terry is the complete opposite. On a routine apprehension, Allen and Terry arrest David Ershon (Steve Coogan), who is in the eye of the storm for some shady deals and high stakes trading, but what they don’t know is that more trouble is heading their way. Now they are on the run from the law and from those trying to eliminate them.

An unlikely duo, two actors of completely different characteristics and acting backgrounds. One is a well-known comedian and known for his wacky roles, Will Ferrell, and the other for its action roles, Mark Wahlberg. But regardless of their previous history both actors find their way to get along. This duo is a reminisce of what Rush Hour brought together as their lead actors in Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. As unlikely as they seem, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have very good chemistry throughout and have no difficulty complimenting each other’s weaknesses. The Other Guys wasn’t only about Ferrell and Wahlberg, their supporting cast was great. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson were surprisingly good, in a comedy within an action movie really fit these two actors well. You can probably bet that in a near future these two might just have more lead roles together since they work so well and are a perfect pair.

After years of comedy movies and other TV appearances, Will Ferrell has established himself as a reliable comic and has also set a certain style that many can try to emulate, but not many can do it the same. Movies that Ferrell starts in are usually made to fit his style and The Other Guys is one of those movies. If you see other comedies starting Will Ferrell, they will give you a clearer picture of what to expect with this movie. Normally some movies spend the first 15 minutes trying to set the tone for the rest of the story, but The Other Guys seems to spend the first 15 minutes taking care of the comedy. The movie quickly ran dry as far as the comedy goes. Again this is the type of film fit for Will Ferrell, so don’t expect anything more to save you the disappointment. The dialogue is a wacky as you can expect, but Ferrell and Wahlberg work as far as the movie lasts, unfortunately the plot and script falls a little short.

The Other Guys arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG4-AVC encode framed at 2.40:1. The Other Guys looks exquisitely good. Colors are vibrant and well reproduced throughout the film. Black levels are rich throughout without overwhelming the image and reducing the level of detailing. Skintones are natural and lifelike, although some scenes feature an orange tint. Detailing is excellent throughout. Close up shots, distance shots, clothing textures, streets, etc. are all well reproduced and revealing. The Other Guys features a thin layer of grain to give it that film like look. There are no signs of image tampering, artifacting, and edge enhancement. The Other Guys looks fantastic on Blu-ray

The Other Guys arrives on Blu-ray with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio lossless track. The track won’t exactly blow you away, but it will certainly please you. Dialogue is centered with clean and clear reproduction throughout the film. The LFE output is strong and is used through the gun battles providing enough support to please the viewers. While the track does many things properly, it fails to capture the ambience effects properly. Some sounds come through the speakers that give you that extra engrossing movie feel, but ultimately are not enough. However, for what it is, The Other Guys sounds great on Blu-ray.

Audio Commentary (The “Mom”-Mentary) – This is a unique or I should probably say odd audio commentary. This track features the moms of various cast and crew members and they cover some aspects of the film. Also, they talk about the cast, but overall is an odd track and not very insightful.

Line-O-Rama – Take a look at the cast improvising lines during shooting.

Everyone Hates the DVD Guy – The camera man is trying to film behind-the-scenes footage while the entire cast and crew are annoyed by it.

Flash Forwards – Gives you a quick glimpse into the events following the film.

Alternate Action – Some more action scenes featuring detectives Highsmith and Danson.

Wasn’t That??? – This featurette gives the viewers a look at the characters within the movie. It’s a extensive look at the characters and how they fit in the story.

Crash and Burn! – A look behind the stunt work done during the film, focusing on the car crash at the beginning of the movie.

Why Are There Brits in This Movie? – Gives an opportunity to the viewers to see how Steve Coogan is being made fun of for his English roots.

Rob Riggle Likes to Party – This allows Riggle to talk about various subjects except the film itself.

We Shouldn’t Kiss Chicken – This is a look at the weird kissing game they got on-set.

Mark Wahlberg’s Eating Contest Entourage – Gives the opportunity to Mark Wahlberg to interview an extreme eater known as Nacho and watch him eat.

Bed Bath and Way Beyond – This featurette is all about Michael Keaton.

Lendl Global Commercial – A commercial about the fictional company within the movie.

Extreme Close Up – Features a set of unique interviews with the cast and crew with the camera pressing their faces. Certainly not your typical set of interviews.

Music Video – “Pimps Don’t Cry” by Cee-Lo Green featuring Eva Mendes.

Previews – Movie trailers for The Social Network, SALT, and Easy A.

The Other Guys is exactly what I was expecting, a wacky comedy with quirky dialogue, some over the top action, and happy ending. It’s the same formula that has put Will Ferrell on the comedy map. Mark Wahlberg was excellent and the supporting cast of Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson proved to be more than just two big names on the list of credits. The script, while good for the first part of the movie, slowly ran dry on the comedy and focused on the wacky side of the leads. However, if you like Will Ferrell’s previous movies you won’t have a hard time liking The Other Guys. The Blu-ray features a great looking video transfer that is parallel to Sony’s high standards and an audio transfer that while is not mind blowing it handles everything thrown at it. This release also packs an odd set of supplements and by odd I mean some of the content is just right down unconventional. I recommend at least a rental.
