Gun Blu-ray Review

Man o’ man, where to start? Gun needs someone to put a gun to the writer’s head and figure just what the hell went wrong, or who cut this script to hell and back. First and foremost, I think the actors did a great job except for the blonde chick who’s name escapes me right now and isn’t worthy of me looking her up. (But dude, she did a sex scene!) Oh that’s right, kudos for her then. AnnaLynne McCord the feisty blonde boss lady vixen with the non-believable power as a black market guns dealer. Who could forget her? I guess in all actuality she probably wasn’t all so bad, it just resorts back to the horrible writing.

50 Cent played a great bad guy, he was believable and he had swagger which personified his character. However he had many horrible-weak lines that right when you were getting into it, you then shook your head. AnnaLynne McCord was just another hot blonde who did an ok job in a horribly casted character all because the movie needed to throw in some tits and ass. And I’m all for the tits and ass, but did we really need to see 50’s in the process? (:-p) 50 Cent played your type casted role of a gangster arms dealer who worked for miss blondie. 50 Loved to tote around this elephant powered (as he so called it) hand gun. A hand gun that stuck out, and thus police were tracking him down as he committed murders along the way for deals gone wrong or ridding themselves of competition.

But I know what you’re wondering, who is that old beat up white guy on the front cover. He sure does look familiar. Well, he should be familiar. He’s practically a screen legend from the 90’s. Mr. Doc Holliday and De Niro’s side kick in the bank robbery smash hit across from Pacino; Mr. Val Kilmer. What in the hell has happened in the world of Kilmer! Val buddy, has it really succumbed to this? Val plays the role of basically a lost soul after doing a long stretch in prison by not ratting out 50’s character. He comes back and ultimately lines up along side him once more. For the character he’s supposed to betray, hell he sure looked it. He owned the part of pathetic loser needing to make a comeback. (Get it?) You can be the next Mickey Rourke Val, I know you can!

Great acting from Val, but a horrible mislead role. Right when you are understanding him they just throw in the “I’m the cop and I will bust your ass and your daughter (who we really haven’t talked about in this movie) will be all alone!” So our old pal Val is forced to set up 50 and gang at a “huge deal thats going to go down”. (very unique right?) So yeah of course, guns a blazing, people arrested, people dead, Val happy, the end. This movie could have been so much more, but I think it may have been pushed to fast to fill in the blanks with redundant story lines where there was a void. Great acting for the most part, not so great script. But hey, there were some cool guns and the movie is called Gun. FTW!? I think not. In the mood for a shoot em’ up? Then you’ll get your “Happy Ending”.

Probably the best thing about the movie, attention to detail really shined through on many scenes. One that comes to mind is the close up of Danny Trejo’s face. Did I really just compare finding video quality in Danny Trejo’s face? Heh, I guess I did. He’s an easy target when his face is all chewed up, either we can see that depth or not. In this case, you can! The bigger question might be whether that is actually a good thing? Additionally, shots of 50 who is known by many will give proof of attention to detail and recognizing him and the video quality projected upon him. Those contacts kept freaking me out, but that and the darks were good with really no main instances of unintentional film grain.

By far the worst gun shot sound effects I’ve ever heard in my life on any movie. Not to mention this audio track must have never been mixed cause I was about to lose my sanity trying to figure out if the HD track was actually playing. It’s funny now looking back, but I thought I had blown my speakers or something when those guns went off close to the beginning of the movie outside the club. I also had to stop the movie and make sure I had on the HD track. Granted, the voice clarity isn’t bad during dialog so long as you have your remote in your hand. *rolls eyes* Constantly turning up and down the volume isn’t my cup of tea. On the plus side, the soundtrack for the movie was obviously pretty awesome if your rap/hip-hop fan as it has plenty of 50’s music and gang. (Yayo etc.) It’s not near as horrendous as the import of The Illusionist from Alliance, (Canada) but it’s far from great or even “blu-ray average”.

Sorry folks, nothing to see here. Keep it moving …

Take this movie for what it’s worth, a rental. You already heard me rant on the audio quality, and the dumbed down plot. That aside, There is actually some good acting and video quality and a plethora of sweet guns to watch in action. The downer which makes it hard to merit a purchase is again below average audio quality and absolutely no supplemental material. I really wanted to like this more, but it seems as if this movie was wounded way before its release. I mean, there’s just got to be some deleted scenes somewhere to make some sense of this.
