Announced at Mondo Talk at MondoCon 2017. The first two Mondo x SteelBook Disney SteelBooks will feature artwork by Tom Whalen and Olly Moss.

Definitely pre-ordered this when it went live. The fact it comes with a protective sleeve is great. Why doesn't this happen more often? If all steelbooks came in a protective sleeve and then shrink wrapped over it, it would cause many less damages!

I don't think "protective sleeve" is the main idea behind these translucent slips . . . as a newbie to MONDO releases and from my limited exposure I've noticed that the slips have artwork and print on them and are I believe a MONDO X 'thing'.

For better protection you can put these MONDO slipped releases into SCF1 slips:-

BTW If new to these releases don't be put off when the item arrives because it looks 'cloudy' . . . that's only because of the thin protective film covering the slip which can be peeled off relatively easily.

Mondo steelbooks don’t tend to sell out quickly. This price is ridiculous. I’m waiting for a price drop to £15.99 or less. Same thing happened with Zavvi’s lenticular Disney steelbooks.

I'm sure I read this is a 3,000 copy release? If so, it won't last long.

I believe there have been a couple of non Mondo releases with a clear outer case, the German Inception being one of them.

I find that so crazy... getting a copy of the Mondo Ex Machina steelbook was a huge pain for me. And with Mondo being able to get such wonderful artwork for their steelbooks, I'm surprised that their example isn't the industry standard.

Pretty sure looper was spot glossed with satin finish In other areas. Possibly boondock saints also but can’t remember.

It goes without saying that the beauty of these steelbooks is not just the Illustrated Art by leaders in the field but also the lovingly illustrated disc art designed to not look out of place inside these gorgeous steelbooks. No blue or other plain colour blocked discs to be found here . . .
There's also the full range of finishes from full gloss to matte, from metallic reflections and spot-gloss to creative use of the white undercoat layer.
Out of the 21 released so far I can honestly say that the only one I'm not keen on is LABYRINTH.

You don't have to look far to see where the inspiration for the old-school steelbook artwork came from . . . the end credits:-

Not saying he definitely didn't draw inspiration from the end credits (although I can't see the resemblance myself TBH), but the steel art is Whalen's usual style.

Usual style, yes, but unlike his other work on similar projects I personally find more than a passing (lol) resemblance between his normal style and the retro style of THE INCREDIBLES end credits - more, say, than his designs for other MONDO Disney / Disney Pixar etc. films and for that reason I'm glad that his work was chosen for this steelbook.

As for THE JUNGLE BOOK steelbook artwork I'd have preferred his work again - instead of the Olly Moss - but more for the inclusion in the artwork of the film's real star - Baloo the bear - and some of the other characters, such as King Louie. who all made an impression on me when first watched as a nipper.
