Advanced Screening: No Strings Attached

WARNING: This will probably contain, what some would consider, spoilers.

I just got back from an advanced screening of “No Strings Attached” starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. I didn’t really know what to expect beyond a romantic film going into the theater, and that’s exactly what I got.

It wasn’t bad, i’d actually consider it one of the better romantic comedies i’ve seen in quiet a while. While about 40% of the jokes have been told in other films there are some gems in there that got me laughing. The plot isn’t really different for the genre, however they did decide on a twist with this film; instead of it being the man that’s uninterested in the relationship it’s the woman. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal it actually brought a bit of fresh air to the genre… After all how many straight men don’t secretly wish their girl friends would give them the go ahead to sleep with as many other women as they wanted.

I really liked Natalie Portman in this film, her character was well written and she did the role justice; as she tends to do. Ashton Kutcher on the other hand was what he always is… Ashton Kutcher. He wasn’t horrid, but i’m not a fan so I couldn’t stop myself from thinking that I wished it were another actor up there delivering his lines. If you like him then you’re in for a treat as he’s not playing the annoying Ashton, he’s actually a lot more romantic.

As for a recommendation of the film, I’d rate it a 3/5. This film probably wont be a film that you rush out and see with all your friends, but it’s good for what it is; and it’s definitely not a bad film. If your significant other happens to be a fan of romantic comedies this is one that you wont necessarily mind sitting though as it’s not too sappy.
