You Again Blu-ray Review

Marni Olsen (Kristen Bell) is perhaps the biggest loser in school. Being tormented through what some called the best years of your life, by the cheerleaders of the school. Fast forward a couple of years later, Marni is now a successful woman working for a PR firm in LA, which is soon to be her old job since her promotion requires her to move to New York, but first she must go home for her brother’s Will (James Wolk) wedding. What Marni doesn’t know is that Will is marrying the person who tormented her throughout high school, Joanna (Odette Yustman) or as J.J. But their first meet up isn’t what Marnie expected and there’s more waiting for her mom Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis) as her past is coming back to haunt her as well. Now Marni is on a personal vendetta to uncover the true face of the goody too shoes Joanna.

It’s tough to imagine how a cast like the one that filmmakers were able to put together that includes actresses like Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, and Betty White go wrong. There was no attachment to any of the characters found in the film as if any of the actors just couldn’t really find their groove. If it was amateur actors I could understand why the movie turned out the way it did, but we are talking about actresses that not only star in regular movies, but in big blockbusters. Although part of the reason the film just fell apart was the writing.

The script by Moe Jelline wasn’t exactly up to par with the cast. There was never a sense of accomplishment with any of the characters. In fact, all the characters felt under-developed and never quite understanding what their purpose was. Sure, there were a few funny moments, but the rest was just simply undeniably bad. A look at the supplements will give you a better idea of just how hard the director tried to keep it all together with his obnoxious persona. I guess this time around a great cast was unable to prevent the boat from sinking.

You Again arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG4-AVC encode framed at 2.40:1. The transfer is almost perfect, but for the most part is looks good. The color palette features vibrant and well resolved set of colors. Black levels inky throughout. Detailing is excellent appearing very revealing, although, there are a few soft shots throughout the film. The film does have a few problems like some ringing, but most of the problems are very minor and many viewers will simply just over look them. Regardless, You Again looks good on Blu-ray.

You Again arrives on Blu-ray with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio lossless track. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout. The rears are barely used for some minor effects. The score fills the soundstage quite nicely. However, the sound design is quite limited as it is very front centric. The LFE output is very minimal and almost non-existent. Overall, You Again manages to deliver the bare minimum, but in this case that’s sufficient to please the viewers.

You Again had a start studded cast with actresses that have long made a name for themselves and can separate from the rest. However, as good as they maybe they just couldn’t foresee just the filmmakers would take the movie to nowhere. It was readily apparent that they just couldn’t do much with the script. The film had its funny moments, but those were simply not enough to save the film. The Blu-ray features decent video and audio transfers that do just enough to satisfy and nothing more. The supplements are enough as they just don’t offer much aside from what we’ve seen. If you are a fan of any of the actresses within the film and you must see this then you’ve been warned. Otherwise, I’d suggest you rent and save your money.
