For those of us who don’t buy DVDs anymore or its rare at best, we do still long for the days to return where we scoured the $5 DVD BIn. (Most Americans are aware of these at Wal-Mart) However this time as the $5 Blu Bin. Blu-ray adoption rates have been steadily increasing year by year with the players becoming more cheaper for the average consumer to pick one up. So when do we hit that readily available $5 price point? We saw this past Black Friday 2010 where the bin was filled with $5 blu-rays mixed with DVDs.
I picked up quite a bit myself, and the actual content on some of these dicss leads me to believe we are a lot closer to continious year round $5 blu-rays in the bin. What exactly do I mean? Well, for starters some of the blu-rays that were double disc editions with a digital copy didn’t include the paper with the code for the user to even access the digital copy. I was more so happy just to get Hellboy 2 at $5 to really care too much about the digital copy.
Never the less, this could become a problem with angry consumers in the future if they implement this with these types of editions in the future. However, the bottom line is they have found a way to scale back and perhaps clear extra stock of certain editions to then roll out a cheaper version later on. So if my predictions are right, at some point the regular Amaray of Hellboy 2 will change from the current editon.
This could actually be a strong sign of how Wal-Mart might market $5 blu-rays in the future. As some blu-rays get remastered due to sub-par transfers within a couple years after the release; they need to push out the remaining copies. Remember the first Blu-ray of Terminator? Already been re-released, and guess which one was in the $5 bin? That’s right the sub-par one.
I also saw some that included a dvd, and now I’ve seen them released with just the blu-ray. So what do you think? $5 Blu-ray bin before year’s end or is more likely to be seen in 2012?
