It is quite rare to see two films tie in at the box office but ‘Cowboys & Aliens’, the co-production by Universal/DreamWorks and ‘The Smurfs’ by Sony, surprise us by sharing the top spot. While final figures have yet to be released to settle this tie, both the films managed to earn $36,206,250 over the weekend.
Jon Favreau is the director of ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ who has previously also directed the Iron Man series, while the production team includes Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg. The success of this original and unique film is now even being compared to that of Super 8, both of which are films that are tough to categorize. This is the reason that the film quite a buzz in the box office upon its debut. The film stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.
While the 3-D animated film ‘The Smurfs’ by Sony has little in common with its competitor, yet the fact that it crossed the $30 million mark pits it against ‘Cowboys & Aliens’, at the box office. The Smurfs comic books and the animated television series from the 1980s served as inspiration for this 2011 3D family film. The film also stars Neil Patrick Harris who is well known for his role in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. There is definitely very little doubt that is film is quite adorable and enjoyable enough for both kinds as well as adults.
Now the competition for the number one position at the box office lies between these two films.
