Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 2 Blu-ray Review

This is the second collection that features only short films. These short films were included in several of Pixar’s movies over the last few years. The first collection sets featured some mildly funny but entertaining pieces, but for this second collection Pixar’s short films are definitely a lot more enjoyable. The set includes Your Friend The Rat, Presto, Burn-e, Partly Cloudy, Dug’s Special Mission, George & A.J., Day & Night, Hawaiian Vacation, Air Mater, Small Fry, Time Travel Mater, and La Luna. Some are better than other, at least in my opinion, but they are all very entertaining.

There are few notable films that just simply standout; La Luna, Partly Cloudy, and Presto. That isn’t to say the rest were not good, but these three were really well crafted. La Luna was by far the most interesting out of the bunch with its father like son message that couldn’t have been delivered in a better manner. Of course with this small selection of short films it should not be difficult for everyone to find their favorite and the bottom line is that the family will enjoy them all.

Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 2 arrives on Blu-ray in 1080p MPEG4-AVC encode. Each short features a different aspect ratio since they are all taken from different movies. The image is clean on all the shorts, this stays true to the amount of attention that Pixar/Disney provides for its releases. Colors are bright and vivid. Detailing is phenomenal on all the short films. Nothing more can be said about this release, it looks great.

For this release there are several tracks available for consideration, the first two are English 5.1 or 7.1 DTS-MA. While the second set features 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby TrueHD. I will say the majority of shorts are only a few minutes only and usually there’s not too much activity all around. However, each track manages to fill the speakers and deliver the sound without a hitch.

Audio commentary is available on every Pixar short film.

The bonus features are a collection of short films by students:

Nitemare – Viewers have the option to view this 5 minute short with the introduction of John Lasseter.

Lady and the Lamp – Viewers have the option to view this 4 1/2 minute short with the introduction of John Lasseter.

Somewhere in the Artic – Viewers have the option to view this 4 minute short with the introduction of Andrew Stanton.

A Story – Viewers have the option to view this 4 1/2 minute short with the introduction of Andrew Stanton.

Winter – Viewers have the option to view this 1 1/2 minute short with the introduction of Pete Docter.

Palm Springs – Viewers have the option to view this 2 minute short with the introduction of Pete Docter.

Next Door – Viewers have the option to view this 3 1/2 minute short with the introduction of Pete Docter.

The Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 2 is a good entry to any collection. It takes the best shorts from all the different Pixar films and puts them into one release. I honestly wish they had more short films in the release as it does feel like there are too few. The Blu-ray offers an array of supplements that complement the main features nicely. Any fan of Pixar won’t hesitate to get this, but I would strongly suggest for a deal.
