Ted Blu-ray Review

As a little boy, John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) made a wish and his teddy bear Ted magically came to life. Since that fateful night, John and Ted have been inseparable friends. However, Ted hasn’t always been the best influence for John, at least according to John’s perfect girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) who thinks Ted is only holding John back from growing up. John’s life is about to get a rude awakening when his friendship is tested by the ultimatums given by Lori, but can John really survive without his thunder buddy?

Before we move forward I must say that I am huge fan of Family Guy, American Dad, and possibly anything else that Seth Macfarlane is involved with. With that being said, you bet I loved Ted, but not just because is a Macfarlane product but because Ted was actually enjoyable and entertaining. Do note that even though the cover shows an adorable teddy bear, Ted is far from being a kid’s movie!!

Ted is exactly what I pictured a live action Family Guy episode, a full feature film filled with foul mouthed and crude jokes. That’s exactly what was delivered. Ted is filled of pop culture references from beginning to end and I must say that it just seems like Macfarlane was given took every chance with Ted and filled it with stuff that just wouldn’t fly on national TV. I am sure it comes to no surprise to us the fans, but if you are not really into Macfarlane’s work then some of Ted’s actions will really catch you off guard.

If anything the comedic aspects of Ted are not that much different than other comedies, it feels more like a buddy comedy, except well with a teddy bear. Sure, it may sound unconventional, but all the components of a buddy comedy are there and even some heart warm moments are thrown here and there just to round up the act. But the entire credit cannot be only attributed to MacFarlane, but the co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis who without a doubt really made Ted work. Their onscreen interaction with Ted is excellent considering that plenty of times there was nothing in front of them (watch the supplements) and yet they managed to make everything work great. So kudos to Wahlberg and Kunis for their great work.

Like I said before, if you are not a fan of Seth MacFarlane’s work then by all means skip Ted. Ted is a resemblance of everything that MacFarlane offers on national TV and possibly a tad bit more. So there’s a high possibility than you may not end up liking anything that Ted has to offer. On the other hand any fans should have no problems picking this up.

Ted arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG4-AVC encode framed at 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The transfer for Ted is actually quite nice, there are a good amount of colors throughout and they are reproduced perfectly without issues. The detailing is exceptional and even Ted is looks very lifelike for being computer generated. Fleshtones are natural and lifelike. Dark colors are reproduced correctly without any signs of crushing. No further problems were detected with the image. If anything the transfer looks great for the film.

Ted arrives with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio lossless track. For starters the film is dialogue driven so your audio equipment will not be put to extensive work. Anyway, the dialogue is clean and clear and directionality is excellent. The rears offer little support with ambiance and atmospheric effects. There’s some support from the bass, but is much more noticeable towards the end during the car chase scene. Overall, the track did exactly what was intended and nothing more can be asked.

Audio Commentary – This commentary track features Director/co-Writer Seth MacFarlane, Co-Writer Alec Sulkin, and Mark Wahlberg. Fans of the movie must check this track out! It’s very vivid and entertaining. On top of that is filled with good facts about creation of Ted.

Ted Making of – There are three pieces within this featurette; A Guy, A Girl, and a Teddy Bear; Doing it Live; and A MacFarlane Set.

Teddy Bear Scuffle – The actors and filmmakers discuss the Ted and John are fighting in the hotel room. This is a real cool look at the making of this scene and all the work that was involved in making it.
Deleted Scenes – total of 15

What else can be said about Ted that I haven’t already mentioned above? Seriously, I’ll keep this short; fans of Seth MacFarlane’s work will thoroughly enjoy Ted, however, those than do not like any of his work will probably not like Ted. I wish there were more supplements, but I suppose the audio track really makes up for the lack of extras. Again, Ted was hilarious from start to finish, pick it up!
