Fresh from the store and just released today is Ame-Comi Girls Vol. 1. Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, it’s a graphic novel that is DC’s fresh take on the superhero universe with the heroes and villains being women. It’s a very cool comic and it was really nice seeing all of the issues together at once. The writing is cleverly done and it makes me glad that they will be continuing the works of these characters. But what really sets these books apart is the artwork. I love that there is a little manga mixed with some strong anime elements. The characters made for this series like Duela Dent and Beast Grrl aren’t as straightforward as you might think. For example, Duella is more like the Joker than Two Face but that’s part of the cleverness that held my interest. Also the coloring is brilliant and bold which makes the art jump off the page. I’ll admit that originally I thought that it wasn’t going to be successful but the crew working on it made a believer out of me and a fan. This is an excellent idea that has been executed perfectly. I highly recommend the book to anyone into comics and would like to try something new, especially the tough heroines of the DC multiverse.
This volume collects all five from the single magazine form broken down as:
-Wonder Woman: 1-3
-Batgirl: 1-3
-Duela Dent: 1-3
-Powergirl: 1-3
-Supergirl: 1-3
The book is listed at $14.99 in USD and is available on Amazon.com
