INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE trailer makes the 20-year wait worth it

ID Resurgence title

Nearly twenty years ago, INDEPENDENCE DAY — aka ID4 — arrived in to theaters and destroyed expectations. Not only that, it also made Will Smith and Roland Emmerich household names. ID4 — which to this day holds up rather well — is still one of the most beloved sci-fi films in all of filmdom throughout the past two decades. After years of chit-chat and rumors, the sequel is finally arriving next year. The trailer for INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE is here!

While Smith decided to pass on the sequel to the film that made him the star that he is today, almost everyone else is back. The trailer focuses greatly on Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman returning as their characters David Levinson and Thomas Whitmore, respectively. Joining them in returning is Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner, and Vivica A. Fox. Newcomers to the franchise include Liam Hemsworth, Sela Ward, William Fichtner, Joey King, Maika Monroe, and Jessie Usher as Dylan Hiller. Emmerich returns to the director’s chair while Dean Devlin, co-writer/producer of the original INDEPENDENCE DAY, is back as producer.

In the trailer, Goldblum’s David Levinson says, while referring to one of the extraterrestrial spacecrafts, “That is definitely bigger than the last one.” Funny enough, though, he could easily be talking about the INDEPENDENCE DAY films in general because by viewing this trailer, it looks like RESURGENCE is about to take the scale of the original film and absolutely annihilate it.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE overtakes theaters June 24, 2016.
