Dr. Herbert West, creator of the re-animation serum has been in prison for the past 13 years due to his zombie-murder incident. One of the kids who witnessed everything has grown up and become a doctor at the prison where West is being held. He left the very last syringe of the serum and tells Dr. West he wants to continue his work.

BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR is directed by Brian Yuzna. He has done a few movies here and there. With this, he is taking the character created by the master of creepiness: HP Lovecraft. There are zombies, blood, gore, and plenty of Spanish accents. Jeffery Coombs is his usual creepy self and super awkward repairing his role as the Doctor.

VIDEO QUALITY:

The video is a 1080p AVC presentation that has a clean transfer. It has a straight to DVD look to it (even though it had a theatrical release) because of the images on screen. The colors are solid with the reds and blues looking the brightest. A lot of the blacks and darker areas allow for nice contrasting but there are some that have an adjusted look to them. This can limit how well the contrasting comes off. The skin tones are all warm and natural minus the dead “blue skin” of course. The details are sharp and textures in skin as well as clothing can be clearly deciphered.

AUDIO QUALITY:

The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that sounds good but there is an imbalance. The score is easily heard no matter what is happening and it can even overpower the effects as well as dialogue at times. There is some very good surround use with the crowded prison and the way that sound echoes on the inside. The voices from the dialogue are clear and natural (when the score isn’t overpowering it that is).

THE BOTTOM LINE:

BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR is the continuation of the character created by Lovecraft. It may not be as good as the original but this movie employs some decent practical effects. On a side note, the score sounds very similar to the Hitchcock film PSYCHO. If you heard them side-by-side, I feel like it would be very hard to differentiate between the two. The release has superb video and great audio minus the overpowering score. There are some really good extras included and the interview with S.T. Joshi is a companion with the extra on the DAGON release. Overall, if you’re a fan of the movie or the series, this is the one for you.
