X-Men Trilogy Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K Review

X-Men is an American superhero film series based on the fictional superhero team of the same name, who originally appeared in a series of comic books created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and published by Marvel Comics. 20th Century Fox obtained the film rights to the characters in 1994, and after numerous drafts, Bryan Singer was hired to direct the first film and its sequel, X2 (2003), while Brett Ratner directed X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).

THE MOVIES:

The Godfather of the entire comic book movie craze is that of X-Men 1. Sure there were flops that came before it like The Punisher and even a very old Captain America film. However it wasn’t until the mutants landed that really turned up the ears of Hollywood to see that comic book movies can not only be good, but also be insanely popular and profitable. We’ve covered these films before so I wont set forth on explaining the synopsis behind the X-Men films but instead we’ll take a closer look at what the 4K Versions of the discs have to offer. We’ll also take an in depth look at the Special Features as I break down what came with this release and what got left behind on “Disc 2’s”

VIDEO QUALITY:

The OG of the comic book trilogies has finally hit Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K. Next to the Spider-Man Tobey Trilogy they don’t get much older than this. So how do these films stack up on Ultra HD Blu-ray? Well enough that they were classified as Ultra HD Premium Label. For films that have mutants of every shade and hue of the color spectrum I must say they look fine so fine.

Mystique’s blues are something to be seen. X-Men 1 has a lot of darkness to it and the deep depth of the blacks really hit home in it. Between Jean Grey, Magneto, Beast, Cyclops, Wolverine and especially Storm you get to really see some 4K res pushed to the max. Lots of blasts, fire, lightning and beyond that really jumps off the screen. Some of the films still show their age a tad, but none the less they look spectacular all things considered.

AUDIO QUALITY:

The X-Men films both on UHD and Blu-ray have the following audio tracks.
X-Men: English DTS HD Master Audio 5.1
X-2: English DTS HD Master Audio 5.1
X-Men: The Last Stand – English DTS HD Master Audio 6.1

IN ADDITION, not noted on the back of the case the UHD releases also have Spanish, French, Spain, Italiano, and Deutsch tracks.

It appears that X-2 and X-3 have D-Box Motion Code though I cannot verify. This release did qualify for the brand label of Ultra HD Premium. That being said, the audio tracks while it would have been nice to get an uplift into Dolby Atmos are still stellar tracks and meet the bill to get that qualification. Still front heavy tracks with Last Stand being a bit more immersive utilizing sub and rears a bit more in my opinion.

However there is still nothing like seeing the opening Nightcrawler scene in X-2. Gotta’ love it!

SUPPLEMENTS:

This X-Men Trilogy on Ultra HD Blu-ray also comes with the original Blu-ray discs, and digital copies. However as a bit of quick to market and/or slight or cheaper way of doing it we don’t get any of the disc 2 special features that all 3 X-Men titles had at BD release. We do still get a a bunch of extras, but if you are upgrading just word to the wise you may want to keep those Disc 2’s from your prior releases if you care about them. Here is what is included below.

On the Ultra HD Blu-ray 4K Discs you get the Audio Commentaries from the predecessor releases. So that’s nice and handy in case you dont want to change discs for that and view in 4K.
