Sorry to Bother You is a 2018 American absurdist dark comedy film written and directed by Boots Riley, in his directorial debut. It stars Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Danny Glover, Steven Yeun, and Armie Hammer. Set in Oakland, California, the film follows a young African-American telemarketer who adopts a white accent in order to thrive at his job. Once he does, he rapidly gets swept up into a conspiracy, and must choose between making money at the expense of humanity and joining with his activist friends to organize labor.

THE MOVIE:
If you know nothing of this movie and simply read only the quotes on the front cover you will still be left wondering what are you about to watch? “A GET OUT ON ACID” “SOMETHING YOU NEED TO SEE TO BELIEVE” and “BRILLIANT AND OUTRAGEOUS”. Those are a few of the quotes from the front and I would say they are all equally correct. This is just one TRIP of a movie! If you get past the craziness and really break down the film itself, the writing, the concepts, and executions through means of production you can see how genuinely unique and brilliant this film really is.
So many paradoxes and contradictions to stereotypes that make for some intelligent comedy. This film is not for everyone, as I would likely wager that it would and will be much more popular to millennials and those in Generation X. However I’m sure there is still a small percent of baby boomers who might just truly appreciate the film for what it was set out to do and accomplish in the first place. Those of which I would consider true cinephiles with a true appreciation for the art of film.
SORRY TO BOTHER YOU stars LaKeith Stanfield who plays Cassius Green. Cash becomes a telemarketer to make ends meet in Oakland, California. He soon realizes there is opportunity at a higher level if he can make more sales and become a power seller and then work on a higher floor above. As he excels and becomes a power seller his personal life takes a dip as his artsy girlfriend strays away from his new corporate look and attitude. Intertwined throughout the film’s plot is hilarity and insanity to levels above your imagination!
VIDEO QUALITY:
SORRY TO BOTHER YOU comes to blu-ray with a beautiful 1080p video transfer to Blu-ray that has great vibrant brights and low full darks that only blu-ray or UHD can really handle. The film has so many colors and a great contrast to inside/outside shots as well as daytime and nighttime. A great blend of colors and hue that blu-ray captures nicely.
AUDIO QUALITY:
SORRY TO BOTHER YOU comes to blu-ray with a lossless 5.1 that is mostly front heavy, but the intelligent and trusted ear of Boots Riley made sure it was a track to amaze. This film has a great soundtrack and the dialogue is piercing. Just a great tightly mixed audio track. Nothing to complain about here.
