TRAIN TO BUSAN Presents: PENINSULA 4K Ultra HD Review

Four years after South Korea’s total decimation in TRAIN TO BUSAN, the zombie thriller that captivated audiences worldwide, acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho brings us PENINSULA, the next nail-biting chapter in his post-apocalyptic world. Jung-seok, a soldier who previously escaped the diseased wasteland, relives the horror when assigned to a covert operation with two simple objectives: retrieve and survive. When his team unexpectedly stumbles upon survivors, their lives will depend on whether the best—or worst—of human nature prevails in the direst of circumstances. – Synopsis from the Well GO USA Website

This follow up to TRAIN TO BUSAN which was a very well-received zombie film and has a strong following. In this, the story plays out like a lot of other zombie films but with a few differences that are shown in the movie. This world that has been created is a bit more fleshed out than in the confines of a train as the first entry.

VIDEO QUALITY

The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation with Dolby Vision that has a decent transfer. Things in the positive column are the details in the images showing off the gritty world where this takes place. There are just these notable points of clarity in the film that fit the format over the Blu-ray presentation. The coloring is bright with certain colors showing their brilliance more than others.  Places, where the details in the images aren’t as nice, is how the movie lacks that feature film quality. As if it was done the inexpensive way. Some of the non-practical effects also have an average look that with a bit more polish, could really be something.

AUDIO QUALITY

The audio is a Korean Dolby Atmos mix that sounds superb. The surround field gets used in the high action scenes and the movement is done very well. The overhead channels aren’t utilized very well but they do get sporadic use. This mix may have been a little better as a solid 5.1 or 7.1 mix. The highs are clean and the bass has some punch. Dialogue is prioritized and works well with effects/music.

THE BOTTOM LINE

PENINSULA is a pretty good sequel but it definitely has a lot to live up to with the first entry. This world that has been started could go on for a few more movies and maybe push the envelope harder. The video on the release has a nice transfer and the same can be said for the mix but there is some room for improvement. There are no included extras and that’s not uncommon for releases from Well Go. All in all, horror fans or fans of the first movie might want to check this out.
