Who shot John Dutton (Academy Award winner Kevin Costner)? That’s the burning question that left fans reeling in the explosive season 3 finale. Following the brutal attacks on Kayce, Beth, and John Dutton, and with their fates unknown, Rip and the other wranglers wield their own brand of justice to take revenge and defend the Dutton legacy. This season digs deeper than ever into the rich Yellowstone history with flashbacks featuring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (stars of the Yellowstone prequel 1883). Includes all 10 hour-long episodes of the Emmy-nominated series, plus behind-the-scenes featurettes, an extended making-of piece, and never-before-seen interviews with cast and crew. – Synopsis via Paramount Pictures

VIDEO QUALITY

The video is a 1080p AVC presentation that has a stunning transfer. The clarity in the images shows off the textures and the tiniest details on the screen. Worn leather, facial lines and stubble, and the various settings are highly detailed. The contrast creates lines and good shadows for a more realistic feel. The coloring is bold but natural at the same time. Nothing is overly exaggerated or overly saturated and the timing is nice. Skin tones are also natural and warm.

AUDIO QUALITY

The audio is a lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix that lacks some of the things you might expect from a series like this. The effects seem tamer than what is happening in the scene. Gunfire is shallow and doesn’t expand into the sound field and comes off as if the front speakers are doing all the work. This is a trend with the Blu-ray releases where the audio needs a little room to widen the sound field. The dialogue is clear and prioritized well.

THE BOTTOM LINE

This season of YELLOWSTONE further shows how well-made the series is and the cast is excellent as per usual. The video is gorgeous and is on par with the other seasons. The audio could use a little boost and rounding out to match up with the show. The supplements get into a lot of the series and even the new prequel show. If you’re a fan or a collector of the seasons, this is a great pickup.
