[Toy Fair 2023] Five Top Brands: Hasbro, LEGO, Jazwares, Spinmaster, and Playmates

Next up in my continuing coverage from Toy Fair are some of the largest and hottest brands. Sadly because of the timing of the event this year (too late for holiday and too early for 2024 reveals) as well as other recent events (Holiday of Play, ttpm) and even some companies own events there weren’t too many new reveals from many of the larger companies. Additionally some of the larger companies had two separate areas of booth space; one that was more open and meant for media and another area behind walls were while there were 2024 products they were not quite ready to be revealed to the public.

With that said there are still a fair amount of products to look at from some of the hottest properties out there so as always let’s dive right in and take a look at five top brands.

Hasbro

Hasbro had just completed their own Pulse Con not more than a week before Toy Fair so there wasn’t a whole lot of new reveals. The company which typically doesn’t have a booth on the show floor took up a space in the Hudson Yards and invited media over to see some of these Pulse Con reveals in person. Represented Hasbro lines included Transformers with several Rise of the Beasts figures and a transforming Optimus Primal and Star Wars which showcased Ahsoka figures, holiday Black Series figures, a Snowtrooper Black Series Helmet, and Luke Return of the Jedi Black Series Lightsaber, and their new line of droidables. In Marvel the big item was seeing the three Spider-man figures based on the three iconic iterations of your friendly neighborhood Spider-men from the live action movies in person. Gaming had a few new games including Twister Air, Risk Strike, Clue Conspiracy, Clue Escape, and a trio of new Monopoly games – Monopoly Chance, Barbie Monopoly, and Super Mario Bros. Monopoly. Finally Magic: The Gathering had products from their Lord of the Rings, Secret Lair, and Lost Caverns of Ixalan featuring cards based on Jurassic Park sets.

While LEGO didn’t host their own event they were at the recent Holiday of Play and TTPM events and most of what was on display is already out on the market or soon to be on the market. LEGO has some of the biggest licenses out there and on display were a bit of almost every property they have which included Sonic, Ideas, Technic, City, Star Wars, Disney, Harry Potter, Marvel, Ninjago, Minecraft, DC, Botanicals, Jurassic World, and Dreamzz. I’m always in awe of nearly every set LEGO puts out but some stand-outs for me were the Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series Luke Skywalker X-Wing, the Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle and Grounds.

Jazwares

Jazwares has become the fourth largest toy company in the US with a strong portfolio including their line of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) figures, Pokémon, Fortnite, Adopt Me!, Bum Bumz,  Halo, Micro Galaxy Squadron Star Wars ships, and their very own Squishmallows plush stuffed toys. At Toy Fair Jazwares revealed they were now working with Hello Kitty products. Their Vault line, which was revealed at SDCC, allows fans to get their hands on the more popular items directly. Their AEW line continues to expand and one of the features the really sets it apart is how closely they work with the wrestler to get the accuracy and detail in all their figures. Squismallows continues to be a super popular property.

Spin Master

The biggest thing from Spin Master this year was clearly their Bitzee products. However they were also continuing to show of products they had showed off at Holiday of Play and TTPM including their Wizarding World of Harry Potter Interactive Dobby and Monster Jam Grave Digger Trax remote radio controlled car lets you maneuver the Grave Digger in nearly any terrain. Other notable items include an Air Hogs Zero Gravity Sprint Wall Climber that that lets you drive on Walls and Ceilings, 4D Build Star Wars Imperial Destroyer, and some really nice Wizarding World of Harry Potter Micro Magical Moments which features famous scenes in the movies; which as we are in wave 1 are all scenes from the first movie.

Playmates Toys

Another company that participated in Holiday of Play and TTPM, Playmates Toys didn’t reveal too many new products and what they did show us we were unfortunately not allowed to photograph. Most of their products included their Miraculous and their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic and Mutant Mayhem lines. New products included new waves for Mutant Mayhem as well as a new Godzilla product line reveal.
