Hi-Def Ninja Exclusive video:

Synopsis:
Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before and is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. But Futureshop doesn't ship overseas. Why should they be region free?
All blu rays steelbooks should be region free as far as I'm concerned. Plenty Americans complain when European titles are locked. These are being aimed at an international market regardless of their domestic only shipping policy.

Region free players are a great investment.

And unfortunately not readily available in Europe except on a few high end models and a few very cheap nasty supermarket quality models. The vast majority are locked for blu ray. The Mondo range is hitting the same market as Nova, Kimchi and Plain all of whom release 95% of their high end steels region free.

That would be ideal but different rights and marketing in different territories always has and may always preclude this going forward. For those interested, luckily there are both-more reasonable cost effective and higher end players- that have become available over the years. These can either be unlocked or made region free with a mod so this concern goes away all together for many customers.

Great explanation, digitalbabe.

Unfortunately not in Europe DB, the norm is region locked. Only Oppo and a few others are region free and they are double the price you pay in the US! Average price for a European Oppo player is around the $1200 mark. A few very cheap players are region free and by cheap I mean really cheap with poor image and little sound options. The vast majority of mid range players that are pretty much the standard are all region locked for the blu ray although many are unlockable for DVD. :)

Hey @psychoscot, yeah I have a number of friends in the UK with whom I chat regularly, and that have definitely expressed this concern for many years. It is unfortunate that higher end players are so costly, but at least there are more options (and cheaper options), as far as manufacters, than there ever were years ago. It stinks, but as the studios hold the cards on this, it's left to the consumer to decide what gives them more of a headache, lol. I used to worry about this all the time, but during the format wars, I ended up acquiring a number of cheaper region-free capable BD players, and just never looked back since. I honestly got too annoyed worrying about whether a certain disc would play or not, but out of fairness there do seem to be more, and better quality 'cheaper' region-free capable players in other parts of the world, vs the UK, so it definitely doesn't make the decision 'easier'...as far as the headache, haha.

Back to the topic at hand, I have not seen this film, but have heard many, many good things about it. So I definitely look forward to checking this out, whether I end up buying the Steelbook or not.

Yeah it is a pain. I went from Lasderdisc to dvd and both machines were US only as all I bought was US discs. Now with Blu ray I went with Samsungs high end model which is region free on dvd but not blu ray. It's a nightmare as I am loving these mondo releases but like many I don't often double dip for the sake of art, I open them all and watch them. On this one I could join the GB and find down the line that it's utterly useless to me, the region is definitely an area that retailers need to be much clearer on and sooner. The Asian specialists are "usually" spot on with the details from day one, but sadly European and US/Can are very slow if at all and often get it wrong.

This is an amazing film coming out as a deluxe package so I hope FS can confirm early what region they have been told to use. :)

A Blu-ray's region code in Canada all depends on the distributor. Drive is E-One and Boyhood is Mongrel, so that unfortunately means that they'll both be Region A locked. Once Mondo teams with someone like Universal or Disney, then you'll know that you're getting something region free.

You guys make no sense...how is it not deserving if it's one of the best films of the year and holds a 99% on RT? And the people that have no interest in the film - fair enough, but if you're a fan of groundbreaking filmmaking you pretty much owe it to yourself to see the film.

P.S. The artwork is a beauty
What I am implying is that it is interesting that they would go for an indie film rather than go with the typical mainstream movie.

Is that a bad thing then? You're saying that Boyhood doesn't "deserve" a steelbook, so I don't know what else could you mean.

Most people complain about the same movies getting steels over the years. This one took everyone by surprise so you gotta take your hats off to that. I still love blind buying a movie and the only disappointment to that comes when the movie sucks. (duh) But with this being rated so high it seems like it'll be a fun experience. And I must admit sounds like some really clever film making when filming over the course of X years to get true aging of the actors.

Didn't expect this to get a release, especially a mondo one at that!
Though I have yet to see the film, I've only heard good things about it.

That said, I'll probably give this a miss as I'm not a big fan of the artwork.

I'm confused by the term "variant edition". I hope that doesn't mean that Mondo will start releasing two colour schemes for each SteelBook like they do with their prints -- one regular, one variant.

I guess I'll wait for the official announcement tomorrow!

Couldn't agree more, I really don't want alternate covers.
