No I don't think it will sell out. Reaction across the forums and social networks except a few has been predominantly negative. Pleasing a few by disappointing the many means a failed product liable to be added to Zavvi's bargain bin. While the film is a firm favourite on here for a steelbook it's still a niche film to the general populace who the retailer has to also cater to. Zavvi sell out of popular titles, they don't on niche films unless it's small print runs and I can't see this being a small run.
The thing for me here is that Zavvi canned this release once before because they couldn't agree on artwork. This time it's been opened up to the public to design something, and I'm betting that none of the people complaining about the winning entry spent any time trying to enter anything better. We're in danger of being given too much power or say into something that is entirely subjective and down to personal preference. We've been given the opportunity to design this one, which is more than can be said for the vast majority of releases. Like I said earlier, it's impossible to please everybody, no matter what they choose some people won't buy it because they don't like it. I miss the days when Steelbook collecting was simple...a title is released, you buy it if you like the film.

If Zavvi monitor the general reaction to this across the net, they may can it again "although I doubt it" They now have A LOT of steels they are having to shift at drastically reduced prices either because of bad art or crap film, this will be another on to that list.

I do agree that I prefer the simple route of like/buy without all this competition rubbish as they always do the contests wrong. I only buy steels now if I love the film and the art/finish is amazing otherwise I'll just buy the standard amaray, which for this film thats the way it's looking.

Yup

They'd be less complaints if studios asked for feedback properly. Fans submit art, fans pick winner based on their votes. No contest so far has resulted in a worshipped steelbook.

For this title, if I was LionsgateUK I wouldn't have even asked. Their track record for nice steels lately would have resulted in something better than what they picked.
"Properly" is relative, and the method of soliciting feedback is the prerogative of the company paying for the marketing and sale of the release. Not every studio or company will leave these choices up to "fan votes". Many shades of gray here with these competitions, which are primarily used to create excitement about he release, not guarantee that the majority of people will "love" it.

Yes in the hope of it being a good seller. When it's a 50/50 like/dislike result there's a chance of it still selling well. In this titles case the results have shown a lean more towards 80% dislike which having worked at in marketing/PR I know will have had somebody being screamed at. There's been very few "it's alright" and a handful of "it's wonderfuls" the rest have been negative and quite bluntly so. No marketing department wants that result especially in an industry where physical sales are dying a death.

The problem with that "all or nothing" mentality that the companies must "bow" to the consumer each time, however, is that most people who "complain" comprise a small percentage of people who are actually interested in a product. Customer service and feedback is such that those that choose to buy or like any product don't say that they do. So the folks who don't "like" something "appear" as though they are in the "majority" because they are the most vocal (vs those that buy and don't want the drama of being criticized for liking something, lol).

Many studios have a history of not asking for feedback at all, because most consumer goods are not "vetted"-they are created and designed by marketing departments without all of this "referendum" stuff. When companies like this open up public competitions, they are often "new" to that game, and the target for all of the negativity and criticism. But often those doing the most complaining contributed nothing to the actual entries...catch 22. Hopefully this leads to other feedback opportunities(the consumer is "allowed" into the decision making process), but they may decide that it's not worth all of the dramarama and go back to business as usual. No consumer is "owed" that ability to provide input.

Why are there credits on the front and back!? Bad enough having them on a steel in the first place but surely they're not gonna run it with them on both!

I'm really just glad they are not using one of the previously over used posters from the film again. The winning artwork is not perfect but it is acceptable.

Jesus all of these forums are getting worse and worse with complaints and trolling. I can only imagine if you people were around when Michelangelo was painting the Sistine Chapel.

Please mods do something about this, it's hard to enjoy any threads now.

The artwork looks good, it's something different from the regular amaray artwork which is good. Also it's original art which should be supported because it's not a safe choice. With white background it would really be slick.

If you don't like the posts, then don't read them. If I see artwork that I think is awful, like this one is to me, then I would like to be able to express my opinion on it. Good or bad, I like to talk about the art, and the quality of the steelbook. I don't want to post on a forum that tries to keep me from posting what I actually think... and I see nothing wrong with how the mods on this site have handled things to date.

That said, I am incredibly disappointed in this artwork and will not be buying it. I have waited anxiously for the past year since it was first rumored/announced and feel very letdown.

Jesus, get off your high horse mate will you!

People have a right to say that they don't like something, doesn't make them trolls!

If you like it, good for you, I'm sure you will enjoy it, but I for one will not buying it, IMO I think it looks rubbish. You disagree? You must be a troll then[emoji12] see where I'm going with this?

Chill out, people have a right to express their views just like you do.

not everyone with an opinion is an artist.

not every artist with an opinion has any desire to enter a competition.

i would say when a professional artist knows what they are doing, they will produce good work, it will be widely praised. i have said it before numerous times, but there is something seriously lacking talent wise with steelbook design in europe. its fail after fail. consistently low standard.

when you get a situation where a studio doesnt even have the confidence to produce good work of its own, and instead leaves the project open for submissions, you know something is seriously wrong. and even if you do get amazing submissions, it makes no difference if the person/people selecting the winner have no taste, or sense of what is a great piece of art. as evident in this case, they dont.

Seriously, can we have this pinned at the top of the thread? Actually, can we have this posted at the top of every thread? It would make this place much more enjoyable.

Well honestly steelbooks are still a niche market compared to amarays. Not as small as they used to be, but still nowhere near the numbers of standard BR releases.

Though feel free to post the officially released artwork that you'd prefer, at least that way we can get some approximation of a conversation going, instead of just endless spouts of whining and self-entitlement.
