A 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching the blockbuster "Avatar" in 3D, a doctor said Tuesday.

The man, identified only by his surname Kuo, started to feel unwell during the screening earlier this month in the northern city of Hsinchu and was taken to hospital.

Kuo, who suffered from hypertension, was unconscious when he arrived at the Nan Men General Hospital and a scan showed that his brain was haemorrhaging, emergency room doctor Peng Chin-chih said.

"It's likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms," he told AFP.

Kuo died 11 days later from the brain haemorrhage, and the China Times newspaper said it was the first death linked to watching James Cameron's science-fiction epic "Avatar".

Film blogging sites have reported complaints of headaches, dizziness, nausea and blurry eyesight from viewers of "Avatar" and other movies rich in 3D imagery.

this past week, avatar only fell 16% from the previous week, which is well under the average projections of 20-30%.

It was at 14% for the previous week than this one, which means its been going really strong.

If it can average 20% for the next two weeks, it will pass titanic sometime within the first week of february.

Climb Avatar Mountain!

Avatar fandom has reached new heights: China changed the name of one of its mountains to “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” in an official ceremony yesterday. The mountain formerly known as “Southern Sky Column” is in a southern province, and the government claims it inspired Avatar’s floating “Hallelujah Mountains,” Reuters reports. And no, it’s not just a name change—there are, of course, two Avatar-themed tours available.

"Avatar" has topped all movies at the box-office to dominate for a seventh straight week.

According to studio estimates Sunday, James Cameron's 3-D epic added $30 million to bring its total to $594.5 million. It has already set a worldwide box-office record, and it is on track to soon overtake the domestic record set by Cameron's "Titanic."

BUT the thing is Avatar is going on it's 7th straight week at number 1. Titantic was number 1 for 15 weeks. Just because things cost more now doesn't mean it's actually made more money... if the playing field was leveled.

There is talks of removing the monetary system from "blockbusters" and changing it to actual tickets sold. (which would give movies dating all the way back to "Gone with the Wind" a chance to prove how well they did...)

Avatar is sitting at #21. (this list is just domestic)

Its still a pretty big feat though. People said Titanic would not get taken down for years, and now Avatar will crush it. Plus, the movie came from no where, it did not nearly have the hype of some other movies (i.e. star wars 1-3, LOTR, Dark Knight, Harry Potter).

Its crushing the trend of losing 20-30% per week (hovering around 15%). It has a lot left in its tank thats for sure, and if it gets a boost from the Oscars it could continue at the top for a lot longer time.

When its all said and done, Avatar could make it into the top 15, possibly top 10.

But the most important thing about it all, is that its a DANG GOOD MOVIE :D

also, avatar has been in theaters for 45 days. titanic was in theaters for almost 300. at 45 days titanic made just over $300 mil.

thats only something like $425,000,000 AFTER inflation.

avatar most likely will not last as long as titanic. but 20 weeks isnt out of the question at the rate it is going. we'll see how high it climbs.

I like Avatar. But I hate to see it become the number 1 movie and win for best picture.

In 5 to 10 years NO one will care that this movie was ever made. There will be another SUPER-AWESOME-MUST SEE-Special Effects Laden film out there and people will jump on that bandwagon.

I just don't get the hype. It's Pocahontas with space ships.

well, to be honest i think it has a shot at best picture, but just because IMO it has been a relatively weak year for movies. there really hasn't been a standout, even by Acadamy's standards. Avatar is the only 'Must See Movie' for the general pop., so it has a big advantage (and it won the golden globe for best picture).

on top of that, its not just a special effects *****. it actually is a decent movie. sure, it could have been MUCH better if it had deviated from the standard story line, but theres enough there to make it a solid movie even without the flashy lights.

and i strongly disagree that no one will care this movie was ever made. it made GIANT leaps in special effects and essentially put 3D movies on the map. of course there will always be bigger and better effects movie, but people are today still talking about how awesome The Matrix was back in 1999, and how it pushed the boundaries of special effects. i see a similar thing happening for Avatar

if you like it, why all the hate? :p

I just don't think it's special. And Cameron, and this movie, doesn't deserve the hype. It's a stolen plot line with touches of Alien (also a Cameron movie).

Just because the move made leaps into special effects doesn't mean it deserves best picture... AT ALL.

The Dark Knight was a MUUUUUUUUUUUUCH better action film than this one will ever dream of being and wasn't even nominated.

IMO Precious deserves best picture, but wont win because of the hype around this movie.

And you can't compare this movie to the Matrix. The Matrix was original this is recycled.

take a look at last years list.

* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Ceán Chaffin, Producers
* “Frost/Nixon” Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Eric Fellner, Producers
* “Milk” Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, Producers
* “The Reader” Anthony Minghella, Sydney Pollack, Donna Gigliotti and Redmond Morris, Producers
* “Slumdog Millionaire” Christian Colson, Producer

MUCH more competition. thats why TDK did not get nominated for best picture. if anyone of those movies came out this year instead, i bet they would win.

i was using The Matrix to show how a movie that drastically pushes the paradigm for special effects can have a lasting affect on people's memories. people will still be talking about Avatar in 15, 20 years.

and dont say it was such an original work. it stole A LOT of ideas from things already in place. they took many of their ideas (the concept of plugging in, the basis of trinity's character, even morpheus' sunglasses) all from one book: The Neuromancer.

sure it was more original than Avatar in terms of story line, but Avatar's originality comes in when you look at Pandora.

i also think that cameron does deserve the hype (even though i dont really like the guy). he spent 5 years on this movie and released it basically as an unknown name and found amazing success.

but thats just what i feel. i obviously love this movie. its my avatar for pete's sake! ;)

James Cameron as an unknown name? He released Titantic, which netted him an Oscar. He's not unknown.

And again, The Matrix "stealing the use of sunglasses" opposed to Avatar not being original in the slightest isn't even a comparison. There are graphic novels from the 80's or so that show Pandora EXACTLY as it's shown in Avatar.

The more you defend, and make me tear into how bad it is, it the less I like it. lol...

lol. wow. i didnt know i had that much of an effect on you :p

again, you misunderstand what im saying. i never said CAMERON was an unknown name, i said AVATAR was an unknown name. he had to create a fan base, one didn't already pre-exist like with sequels or movies like a TDK. to me, when a movie is successful without that deserves some credit.

also, i conceded that the matrix WAS more original than avatar. i dont know why you cant get over that. and it wasn't just the sunglasses. you need to read neuromancer to get the full grasp of it.

now saying avatar is not original in the slightest?

you can tear into it as much as you want. ultimately i agree with most of what you are saying (not super original, not as good as other movies like TDK/Matrix, etc), except i see the biased hate as a little excessive. its ok if you dont like it, but saying it over and over again gets a little old.

me, i can separate a movie from being a really good movie, from being one that is just fun to watch. while avatar does not have an original story line or good acting, it is a movie that i have a TON of fun watching.

and apparently im not the only one
