I'm just curious what other collectors think about that question.

If you have $300 spending for steelbook, then what would you do?

Buy the holy grail steelbook like (Iron Man Futureshop, Rambo, etc) that you have been wanting to add

or

do you buy 6 individual steelbook at a price of $50 each.

I'm curious what you would do in that situation....

I see some members making comments like "I can't afford it", but then I see them with 50+ steelbooks in their collection.

Well Stevo, there were 2 auctions for the same John Rambo steel and the prices were astronomical (it doesn't really matter if the bids were real or not - at the end of the day the prices will stick in everybody's mind). A member on this form sold his sealed copy for 350 Euros a few weeks back I think. I'm not sure if there is a trend or not, but logically the prices should increase until something happens (Zombieland play and German rerelease spring to mind).

Last year IM FS sold for $1000 (during the year sealed copies could be obtained for $600 a few times) and now this socrates guy tries to sell a scratched Le Grand Bleu for $1200 (sold for $500 a few months ago). I'm not looking at the development of these prices too closely, because I'm a different kind of collector. I want all steelbooks of movies that I like, steelbooks that are great looking and thirdly, things that could improve in value and are considered rare (this category for me includes things like first editions of Death Race DE, Halloween DE, Hellboy 2 DE - all movies I wouldn't want to watch, but the steels are rare and they were still cheap when I bought them).

You stevo are a holy grail hunter - which is fine. You bought several copies of Resident Evil Quadrilogy (which I still think will be available for the ridiculous price of 67 Euros in 10 years time - no matter how often amazon.de writes that there are only 5 copies in stock) and were quite upset when the almost identical (missing RE4 3D only) MM edition came out. This is what happens if you focus on these things only. Rereleases will affect you big time whereas I don't really care if Zombieland RE looks exactly like the first one - this is just how the game works and for me and many others here it is a game and some things shouldn't be taken so damn seriously.

Trust me, there are more important things in life than having a sealed copy of a really really bad movie with a non-actor who looks like a surgical experiment gone wrong and that also includes a kids' wash-on tattoo...

Oh yeah, and I REALLY don't need to stay up to speed on Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet unless I'm x-mas shopping for my grandmother....

I think there are major changes since you made this post in regards to the price of grails such as Rambo and IM lol. I'm sure you're aware of the recent sale of the sealed Rambo? I know people are skeptical, but the seller has a great history of selling high priced steels, just look at his feedback. Even just now, I had my eye on a opened FS IM, it ended up selling for over $450, I paid $285 for my opened copy just a little over 1 month ago. Thats an increase of $165 in roughly 1 months time. That seller of Rambo has another sealed Rambo, plus T2 Black, Romeo & Juliet, and Moulin Rouge up for bid as we speak. You should keep an eye on these to stay current on recent developements.

BTW, I don't consider some of the steels you listed as "grails". To me, a grail has to be able to command a CONSISTANT bidding price of over $500 (to be changed very shortly, I'm sure) in an auction setting. Which at this time, eliminates about 99% of all steels.

I never said hunting these grails down was the most important thing in life. But we are in a steelbook discussion forum aren't we? Thats what we do here, what else are we gonna talk about in this forum, baking cookies? Yeah, in regards to RE Quad, like I said in previous posts, after they did that, I was not happy, as all the Zombieland collectors are at the moment. The next thing I did was not getting a single German release since then. Problem solved. Its a good thing I actually like the look of RE Quad. And weather you like or dislike MR or R&J is not the point. It sells for what it sells for. The market is bigger than any 1 individual.

Some people on this steelbook forum talk about the actual movies, the different editions, the look of them, the best way to get them and actively engage in trading some and helping others getting them.

Others just keep on talking about the value and how important it is to have what a few people are caling the holy grails - it's only one aspect of it.

And R&J and MR are not even steelbooks, so in my (more than humble) opinion that I'm not trying to force upon anybody, there really is no reason whatsoever to talk about them...

To keep this short, if you have the money to spend, I would say hunt the grails first as they are the hardest to find and the prices will just keep bumping up. New releases can always be found later. The recent prices for unsealed and sealed John Rambo, unsealed Iron Man, sealed 2.0, sealed and unsealed Inglourious Basterds, chinese Iron Packs of Romeo and Moulin have commanded a value increase from ebay auctions. These steelz are very unlikely to be released with the same artwork and will only get more expensive.

I say again that the grails and steelz that demand the most value (sealed) will be the:
*BIG FOUR - Le Grande Bleu, John Rambo Uncut, T2 2.0, Iron Man FS
*The chinese Iron Packs - ID4 Error Version, Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet
*FS Titlies - Inglourious Basterds and I now see Terminator Salvation IP rising fast!
*Taiwan Slip covers - Gladiator TW, Terminator Salvation TW, Captain America TW
*FNAC - The Dark Knight FNAC with sticker!

If you have a chance to get the above at a reasonable price go for it. New releases can always be found later. Even if you don't want it, someone else will :)

Thats a pretty accurate list my man. The one that I'm most curious about is FF VII Advent. Although there are 5-6 different versions of it, I have not seen a single brand new, factory sealed copy up for auction. I bought both my copies 2 years ago for $80 a piece. I still to this day don't know what this title can command in an auction setting. All others, I've seen, but not this one.

Final Fantasy 7 advent will command around £100 - £150. The Korea version with slip I have seen a BIN for nearly £145 a few months ago. Korea version I say is the rarest from the releases. Bids on an open/mint Korea version was nearly £90. So I estimate a sealed is around £150, give or take a little, and the other versions at least £100 +.

Captain America TW, Terminator TW, and no doubt Gladiator TW sealed are the grails from the slips that command at least £200 but with an exception to Gladiator. A sealed Gladiator TW is virtually impossible to find and I say it is probably one of the rarest, or if not THE rarest steelbook to find sealed. Even an open one is rare enough to find. I would trade or sell 30 standard priced steelz to get that :)

Back to the original question, woulld you buy a grail 'slip' cover steelbook over the general releases that are available world wide? Some like slip covers, the unique rarity, some think its a total waste of money for that extra slip. There are different sections I can see. Others feel Iron Packs don't qualify as a grail because it is not a steelbook.

So to break this down we can have three different categories:

- The BIG FOUR
- Iron Packs
- Slips
- Other releases such as Inglourious Basterds, Star Trek, Wanted, etc

GREAT TOPIC..:scat:
Personally, When i was a young whiper snapper like most kids i collected stamps..had about 10,000 mostly used some new/mint From all over the world..spent years getting these little suckers, only to find that i never had anything unique and the hole lot was valued at about $3.50.(spirit buster)
About two years ago i decieded to add to my bluray collection.
So naturally I got into steels (never realising id never pay my bills ever again or eat more than once a week to sustain my habbit)..
YES I AM A STEELBOOK JUNKIE (please don't judge me)
Anyhow i watched this forum for about 6 months before sticking my toes in the water and making a wank of myself (that didn't work) BUT i did decide To change my childish thinking (cause im a grown up now).
"GREED IS NOT GOOD"..less is best
If this was WAR..Then i was gunna hunt down the GENERALS of this steelbook world and mop up the litte soldiers later.
WELL ive got most of the generals bar one, just chasing down a couple of CAPTAINS and a few SARGENTS....
SCREW THE SOLDIERS you can have them.
So if little JOHNNY comes up to me and asks my advise on collecting...Id sit him down quietly and TELL HIM TO FORGET IT :wtf: Save youself from this bottomless MONEY PIT put your hard earned $$$ boy into share's and be a fricken millionare....
Does this POST help any of you NEWBIE'S :D
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.Is the go :scat:.."YES SIR EE" Problem is if your in this game long enough you still end up with WALLS full of these METAL MONSTERS.
SO KEEP STEELIN :oohyeah:

Is this on ebay.uk? if so, I'll have to keep an eye out on that site. I didn't see any for 145 GPB on ebay, or rest assured, I would have snapped it up. Are they showing up on ebay.uk often?

Yep Ebay.co.uk. There was one FF7 Korea starting at £135 with no bids on it. I was going to but it was pricey. Reason it wasnt bought because the listing ended at 2am UK time so everyone most probably gone to bed.

If you want to discuss prices, go to the values thread.

If you're a collector, the longer that $300 steel eludes you, the longer it burns on your mind. So I would buy the $300 steel before it possibly rises in value again. Then go back and pick up the rest in time.

I'm not 100% certain on what you're talking about, but I'll take a stab at it. So basically, you're saying that you had a bad experience collection stamps, and now advise that collecting steels is a bad idea, because in time, they will all be useless pieces of junk. Is that it? I have a story of my own, which I aluded to on an earlier post on this very thread. Basically I was into a game call "Magic the Gathering' back in the early 90's. Went into a card shop with $20 to by packs of cards. I saw the holy grail there, a "black lotus" selling for $80, and can't believe anyone would pay that for a playing card. Anyways, that "playing card", that I passed up sold for $6500 at auction just a few weeks ago. With my $20, I bought a bunch of packs, that never amount to anything.

The moral to this story my old friend is that there is always 2 sides to every story, you have your stories, I have mine. Whether its a good or bad idea is for each individual is for himself to decide. Your post reads rather negative and bitter to me. Maybe you regret on missing out on some of these steels. If you, or anyone that agrees with you think these are a waste of money, then why collect? No matter what, you're paying a premium for packaging. Do yourself a favor and quit collecting if you think its a waste of money.

Well It would seem that my post went down like a lead balloon..(NOW that's humour)
Stevo..Its called a little HUMOUR with a little bit of SARCASIM...OBVIOUSLY... "MY OLD FRIEND"... YOUR MISSING BOTH..LIGHTEN UP DUDE...Your "taking" a STAB at it, was AND is "way off beam." buddy. My Feeble attempted touch of humour obviously went way over your head...And I APPOLIGISE for that..(NOW that's sarcasim) Are you starting to get it?
So mate just for you i will explain in terms that i hope you may understand..
The post was titled basiclly "when you started collecting did you hunt for the rare/htf steels or did you spend those $$$ on say 6 lesser titles"
My stamp reference relates to that i had 10,000 lesser stamps but not one unique one..so the collection was not worth the time and effort.(in my opinion) no one else's.
Quantity overruled Quality..In relation to collecting steels i did not want to make the same mistake..this time i was going for QUALITY not QUANTITY (are you still with me) again "sarcasism"..In reguards to being bitter and negative that i missed out on getting these steels..Well No.. cause i have most of them.BUT there are a couple of (Shall we say) medium priced steels I DO NOT HAVE.In my post i refered to these as captains and sargents(thats my humour) whereas the generals are the IRONMAN(FS) and RAMBO'S(MM) of the world.(can't believe i have to explain this).
In case your not keeping up with current events mate..This is a very expensive hobby, and there's not many ninja's on this forum that at some stage has not mentioned in their posts things like (Iwould love that steel but when my wallet sees me coming it RUNS AWAY and hides or ive just been to the bank and got a personel loan so i can now get this new wave of steels):oohyeah: THERE not bitter or nasty (THERE CRACKING A JOKE) its called humour..There are so many steels coming out at the moment that even if you only COLLECTED the OOS or SOLD OUT and HARD TO GET STEELS you WOULD'NT need to be in this game for long before you have a wall full of them.(thats a fact)
And its called sarcasim when i said A NOOBIE would be better off putting his $$$ in the bank..."WE ALL WOULD" :hilarious: BUT THERES NO FUN IN THAT :D
IM EXTREMELY SUPER PROUD TO BE A NINJA AND BEING ABLE TO HAVE A BIT OF FUN WITH ALL MY MATES ON THIS FORUM.(well those with a sense of fun) .Stevo try reading between the lines buddy and you might enjoy it more and don't take yourself so serious.:(
In Conclusion...I HAVE A WALL FULL OF expensive OOS and HARD TO GET "METAL MONSTERS" (humour) And I  EVERY ONE.
(I NEED A DRINK AFTER THIS :shots:) :oohyeah: "THATS HUMOUR"
So Stevo are we still good mates."your still on MY xmas card list you know."
And dude about your BLACK LOTUS that you missed out on all those years ago (who's bitter now) cause mate i bought that BLACK LOTUS AND ITS NOW PARKED IN MY GARAGE. :D (NOW THATS HUMOUR)

I would probably go with the 6 steelbooks for $300. My only worry/concern with either scenario is with all the re-releases we have been seeing there could be a good chance that the "Holy Grail" (in your eyes) you just purchased gets a re-release with the same art work.

I personally have really started to cut back on the number of steels I get because of all the releases. Just my opinion.

Cheers!

If you buy an expensive one because you think it's cool and actually like the movie and design then go for it.

If you buy it for other reasons you'll be pretty bummed if the bottom drops out of the market and the price tumbles.

In that case go with the 6 movies you enjoy and appreciate regardless of value.

For me there are more of the $30-50 steels I still need to cross off my list before I'll consider scooping out $100-300 on a grail. As for whether I ever would..probably not unless I won the lotto :D to me there are many more things in life worth $100-300 to me.

yeh !

I have to agree , I would rather have them $40 steelz any day to 1 rare steel zthat sits in a cupboard & never sees Daylight .. poor thing :(

Easy for you to say Mr TC that owns most of the grails :naughty::naughty:

listen to the Proclaimer !!

I would walk ten thousand Miles & I would walk ten thousand more :hilarious:

I am finished with Rare steelz mate :),

gonna leave it to the Professionals from now on :), as there seems to be Plenty of them around now , so its back seat cruising for us from now on Buddy :)

But ~!!

I do regret not buying Robin Hood TW :(

I just got Beserker Predator HT
