Desirability of steelbook collecting

The year 2012 has seen a massive surge in steelbook releases, and collectors. Of the 35 pages of threads on HDN steelbook forum, 24 have been started this year. Back catalogue films, new releases and multiple releases in different countries has, I imagine, lead collectors to become more choosy about which to buy and where to buy it. "Limited" releases to 4,000, shop exclusives and steelbook treatment(debossing...) are now crucial deciding factors whether customers buy, and judging by the posts on numerous thread here and elsewhere reporting that a lot are keeping steelbooks sealed, over-riding the film itself.

Now for the statement.

In 2012 the huge increase in steelbook releases has lead to the decline in desirability of steelbooks. Discuss.

What were these prices 2 years ago. I bet they were a lot less. If anything prices are up. Just look at the flood of steels Play.com pushed out the door in the last 6 months. Its mind boggling. It takes a little time for that flood to dry up.

Fair point. But also how many collectors are taken out of the market for a particular re release factors in the price of a particular steel. Given time there will be new parties to the game/hobby. Demand could go either way. It is fair to say plays IM impacted prices of the Mediamarkt and FS IM. With time I believe all will rise in value but not to the heights seen before for IM FS.

I think Steelbooks are very gradually decreasing in value slowly but will eventually have a huge drop in value because we are in a increasingly digital world. Just my thoughts, still enjoying my hobby anyway.

There is something coming down the line ... which should rear its head this year. When it does, it will be VERY good for the collector side of things. Something many people have begged for over the years. I would say if i could but i was told to keep lips sealed. It will give steels a big boost in popularity. And I know of many happenings in the USA which will help too.

I bought one of those 3 IM FS. I avoided the dodgy sticker one. High risk transaction as seller has zero rating. I will let you know if I ever receive it.

I hv always thought that IM Plays will affect the price of IM FS in the short term. So the IM FS price is a specific situation which does not affect other steels. Having said that, I do believe that steels that collectors, for whatever reason, regard as non-collectibles will continue to slide in price.

Steels that collectors hold in high regard will continue going up in price. It is same for all types of collectibels whether they are gaming cards, coins, stamps or art.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and assume you bought the one from Austria. I bought Zimmer 1408 from him and am still waiting. It's a long trip from Austria to the U.S..

Nope. I bought the one fr Essex. £400. Seems legit. He is very responsive. Parcel has been posted. Let's see what I receive. :)

Edit - Btw, I do think that IM FS will exceed $1,000 by a long way one of these days....that is my guess.

Not that one mate. If someone paid $600 for a dented Iron Man FS they are plain dumb. Here are a couple sold listings of Iron Man new/sealed with the sticker. These are mint, no flaws.

Edit: If you put eBay's fees into the equation the sellers didn't even get the complete $600. EEK!

Where the hell are these popping up? Why can't I ever see them? 2 of them I'm familiar with. That Bronson guy is a zero feedback seller, with a BIN price of 600. This guy is extremely dodgy. That Sakake guy also had a BIN of $600. The 3rd guy seems to be an Austrian, was the only one that had people bidding. BIN prices are not indicative of what things bid for. You never know, someone could just put up an extremely attractive BIN price to move an item quick. Perhaps they needed money quick? who knows for certain? I would have bought / bid on 2 of those items for sure. Only that zero feedback guy is not trustworthy.

Zero feedback guy? Do u mean the Essex guy I bought from? I just called the post office. The parcel arrived in Singapore last night. I will get it by Wed, maybe earlier. Let us see what is in the package.

Just another consideration, some people of course create ebay names aside from their regular 'seller' or 'buyer' names because they don't want to be known to be the same member on forum x, as they are likely to get trashed on forums if deemed a hoarder, shill bidder, hyper, etc etc. So even if someone has 0 feedback, they may be a well known member all along just looking to sell some more rare items without all the flack which sometimes bubbles up over pricing on forums....

You vouching for this guy Chan? I'm always leary of zero feedback people slinging grails onto ebay like they are nothing. You must have alot of faith in, uh, whatever it is about him (and his zero feedback lol). Thats good that you actually got the item.

I am gonna guess (drum roll).........A PRICE GUIDE!. Am I right or am I right? As for the guy who said digital will kill this steel collecting hobby. I say please, bring it on. The sooner the better. Lets get rid of all physical formats for movies, and see what happens to steels!

Hi Stevo,

No, I am reserving my comments on the seller until I actually open the package and see what is inside.

I decided to take a risk and buy from him. I made up my mind to take the risk at that time and if it goes wrong, I only have myself to blame. i am happy with the risk.

Thats my kinda guy! No risk no reward. No pain, no gain. Go big, or go home. etc ect.

Same seller sold his T2 2.0. Looks like he wanted a quick sale and listed the two grails for reasonable prices.

It's been a long time since I don't visit the forum....

But I think what I said long time ago in this post has come true. The value of the steelbooks has decreased a lot and is still going down...... :(

That might be true, but who would spend $1000 to buy a steelbook version of a movie you can get for $10 and under easily? EEK!

It can come down to personal preference. Also, you could not get the SB for 10 or less :p. The amaray yes, not the FS IM. The amaray is a whole different topic, is almost comparing apples and oranges.

Buying a collectible steelbook is not quite the same as buying a movie. If that is the only relevant measure, you will not be able to explain why anyone would pay more than $50 for a steelbook. The fact is, like it or not, people have been paying hundreds of dollars for steelbooks in the last few years. And not all of them are insane. LOL!!
