The worldwide leader in family entertainment is about to get a great deal more entertaining, as the Walt Disney Company agrees to acquire iconic comic book company Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion.

More than 5,000 iconic comic book characters will soon be in the hands of Disney, raising serious questions about the future of Marvel video game titles from Activision, Sega, THQ, and the upcoming MMO from Gazillion Entertainment. Under the terms of the agreement, Disney will pay Marvel shareholders $30 per share for their Marvel stock, plus .745 of a share of Disney stock for each share they own.

"This transaction combines Marvel's strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney's creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories," said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. "Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney."

That's Disney's say on the matter, and here is Marvel's, from the official press release:

"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses," said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel's Chief Executive Officer. "This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney's tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world."

Both companies have approved the deal, though it still has to clear the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act and various regulatory committees before it can be finalized. Once finalized, Marvel's Perlmutter will continue to oversee Marvel's properties, working with Disney to help integrate the two properties across multiple lines of business.

We're staying on top of the situation, with calls out to Disney, Marvel, Activision, THQ, and Sega for comment on what effects this move will have on Marvel-based video game properties.

I am a bit afraid of what they might do with this lol

Wow, here come the dumbed down marvel heros and no more movies that are gritty like TDK (and yes I know TDK is DC but just saying, maybe no marvel gritty movies ...)

Hopefully they let Marvel operate as always without stickin their noses in.

They should create a Marvel World ala Disney World

Yeah, and half the park is adult oriented so we can see Storm and other big boobed chicks walking around and drink lots of beer at the .... MARVEL BAR! Where Wolverine is the bar tender and slices up 4 limes in a slice before they magically land in 4 corona's before being served! :scat:

Um... no.. You do know Disney has other Movie Stuidos besides their name brand Disney one right... That make horror movies and R movies, etc...

i wonder if this means universal studios has to get rid of all their marvel themed rides. i know they have a spider man one and a hulk one...

The best thing that could come out of this is this...

Disney is planning a complete revamp of their California Adventures theme park. What if they add a HUGE section dedicated to the Marvel Universe.

Plus we know we'll be getting all kinds of new movies, games, etc. I'm not worried about it being watered down.

Disney has their hands in the porn industry and they had Insane Clown Posse on their record label.

yah, ive heard rumors about chip n dale man, those two dudes are PIMPS!!!! :hilarious:

My friend was complaining about this... I really don't see how it's a bad move, Disney is the best studio in my opinion, they always put time and care into there movies and they own a lot of good mature films as well(Sin City!)

i'm not gonna rate too soon and i'll see what happens...gotta see how everything pans out before i start jumping the gun,it sounds good at first because Disney is a billion dollar company, they will always sell with good Movies like the toy story & Car's..

this is what i was wonmdering. WTF??? i hate this move.

oh ya, they have a doctor doom ride as well. it's an awesome park and i hope they don't strip those rides out. I'd much rather goto universay Island of Adventure over disneyworld any day.

i think its a good move for everyone as long as it dont mess with everything, but i was under the impression that sony held the rights to spiderman and fox had the xmen rights and universal had the hulk because back then they where sold of differently??
