I probably still have my old beaten up DVD steelbook of Robocop somewhere, that looks like the postman tried to fold it to get it in the letterbox. It's only since I joined HDN that I've become victim to 'OH NO, A PAINT CHIP!!!' thinking.

But getting back on the Dredd track, thankfully those of us that joined the group buy in a previous life are receiving GB update messages. After waiting this long I'd be really annoyed to miss out.

If I miss this group buy, I'll go 'Hi-Ex' on someone's arse!!!!!!!!
So, is this like...happening TODAY?
I guess the preferential treatment that those of us who pre-ordered before are getting is this current update by PM from Martin...
( I just wish I could make my phone make a noise just when I get the Dredd updates so I could take a nap!)

As I understand it the movie rights owners of Judge Dredd at the time in the 80's were present at a screening of Robocop, where the producers of that film literally apologised to Dredd's producers saying, "yeah, it's Judge Dredd isn't it?"
Which set the production of a Judge Dredd movie back nearly a decade!

Also this shot from the Robocop making of documentary looks mighty familiar:

I saw in interview with the ROBOCOP director and he basically said they wanted to make a Judge Dredd movie but they couldn't get the right's, so they made ROBOCOP.

For Judge Dredd's protracted journey to the screen, I highly recommend 'The Making Of Judge Dredd' by Jane Killick, David Chute and Charles M. Lippincott.

I dug out my old copy to clarify the story, here goes:

By 1985 producer Charles M. Lippincott had acquired the rights to Judge Dredd from then owners, IPC and together with executive producer Susan Nicoletti began talking to writers and fans of the comic.
One fan was Ed Neumeier (who later went on to co-write Robocop) who had actually attempted to buy the rights to Judge Dredd but couldn't because Lippincott already owned them!

Later in the book executive producer of Judge Dredd, Edward R. Pressman, describes seeing a preview of Robocop "and coming out pretty depressed.
It was a demoralising experience because we realised how much was taken from Dredd."

Nicoletti also remembers the screening: "I know (Robocop producer) Jon Davison, but I didn't get invited to the screening. That piqued my interest and Charley and I actually snuck into the screening. And we were like, 'Oh my God, not only is it Judge Dredd, it's so damn good.'
So we're downstairs in the lobby and everyone is mobbing Davison and his face was beet red. I mean his face was always red, but this time it was blazing. He looked at me apologetically and he just shrugged and said, 'It's Judge Dredd isn't it?' And Charley's standing next to me, nodding.
"After Robocop we had to cool our jets for a while. We were no longer seriously pursuing Dredd."

So there you go, from the horses mouth!

Hope you enjoyed that little diversion into movie trivia folks! ;)

speaking of Dredd it is about time we get a premium edition for Sly's version ...
Does anybody like that? In my entire life, I have never met anybody who likes that film. I mean, if you love Judge Dredd, it's an abomination. And if you have no idea about Judge Dredd...then it's just a terrible Rob Schneider/Sylvester Stallone buddy movie on its own.
