This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo is taking a giant step towards returning to the glitzy, people-packed shows of three years ago, with attendance expected to be about ten times last year's show and the exhibit halls nearly the same size as the shows that once included ear-splitting rock bands, fire juggling and bikini-clad models.

E3 2009 will also see the return of a more relaxed registration policy for show-goers and rules that once more allow models on the expo floor.

The return to the size and glamor of earlier E3s comes after two years of downsizing and falling attendance at the show that once drew 70,000 people to Los Angeles to revel in all things video game.

In 2006, the Entertainment Software Association announced they would be downsizing the show and moving it to Santa Monica. In 2007, the show returned to the Los Angeles Convention Center, but remained a shadow of its former self. Several developers decided to not attend last year's show, including Activision, Atlus, Bethesda Softworks, NCsoft, Vivendi Games and Warner Bros. Interactive.

This year's list of attendees shows that all but NCsoft are returning to the show.

“The 2009 E3 Expo will be the preeminent North American computer and video game event,” said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA. “With robust exhibitor sales, high attendee interest, and strong commitments from multiple industry sectors, we are going to ensure the full excitement and energy of this industry is on display.”

Currently about 70 exhibitors are listed as attending the show, which is more than double the number at last year's. And event organizers say that the floor is filling up quickly.

"We encourage interested companies to contact us because floor sales are going quickly with more than half sold out," a spokesman told me.

Another major change to the show is the new registration policy which has been relaxed to allow more attendees to make it into the show. The last two shows were by invitation only. But this year's show return's to the 2006 policy of allowing people to register to get in.

The show is open to all "credentialed" international and U.S.-based media, industry analysts, retailers, developers and business partners.

Industry professionals need to submit two pieces of identification showing they work in the industry and press credentials are acquired by registering on the site. Both media credentialing and attenddee registration is now official open over on the e3 site.

While the show floor maps aren't yet available on the official site, I've heard that this year's show will essentially be the same size as 2006's convention hall-filling show but without Kentia Hall.

Epic Games have just announced that they will be showcasing new features in their Unreal Engine 3 at this year's E3, in Los Angeles, California.

The demonstrations will be closed door only and will outline some new features to the engine that can be utilised on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

The Unreal Engine 3 has been successfully implemented on titles such as Unreal Tournament 3 and the Gears of War franchise this generation and although lots of new features were shown at this year's GDC in San Francisco, Epic look set to deliver even more additions to encourage developers and publishers to use their product.

Well it better be good, seeing that no one seems to use UE3 properly. Just Epic themselves. They also need something to keep in line with Crytek's CryEngine 3. Makes it seem old by comparison.

Capcom has confirmed that a North American version of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for the Nintendo Wii is indeed one of their two secret games for E3 2009, debuting in playable form at the Capcom booth.

The magazine scan we posted Saturday is from the new issue of Nintendo Power, which features the exclusive reveal of the 2D fighter that we were relatively sure would never make it out of Japan. North American players will be able to pit Capcom characters like Ryu and Roll against Tatsunoko animation studio icons such as Tekkaman and Ken the Eagle, some sooner than others.

The game that many thought would never make it to North America is actually in the works and will be at E3 for all of you lucky Unity members to get your hands on.

Yes, it'll be there, and it'll be playable. Look for more details out of Capcom within the next two weeks leading up to the big show.

This is freakin awesome! :) I've been thinking of importing this game, but I no longer have to. I am going to spend some time at the Capcom booth!

No, we can't believe we just wrote that headline either. And according to scattered reports (and a variety of phone calls we made this afternoon), it's the unfortunate truth: Some Japanese developers and producers are canceling their trips to E3 2009 due to Swine Flu worries. Capcom's Keiji Inafune and his game, Dead Rising 2, will both be missing. (This isn't the first time Inafune is canceling a trip.) Develop is also reporting that Square Enix and Koei will be canceling some employees' flights, with the Kingdom Hearts team and "an unspecified number of [Koei's] Japanese employees" taking the hit.

We asked Tecmo if there would be a change in its lineup at E3, to which a company rep assured, "No. Our content is still scheduled to be there and everything on the show floor, if not by the staff that's scheduled to fly in from Japan, it'll be demonstrated by our own staff from the US office." Tecmo also said producers for its upcoming lineup are still scheduled to appear alongside their titles "As of today, we've been told our producers will still be in attendance." Konami declined comment as of press time and the ESA (E3's governing body and financial supporter) has yet to respond to our inquiries. As it stands, it looks like we'll be waiting 'til PAX 2009 or even the Tokyo Game Show to get our hands on Dead Rising 2.

No man, like .. if you get the swine flu you have a 0.0000068% chance of dying from it.

This is no joke man, I would expect you to be more serious about this matter and respect people's desire to live their lives.

Swine flu is serious business.

But it's still not EPIC. There's still more deaths from drunk driving/other things within LA over a day or two compared to swine flu deaths.
well there just trying to prevent someone bringing it back to japan to start it there.better safe then sorry it's just a game.im pretty sure if they had it the u.s would do the samething
