Fallout: New Vegas announced

Bethesda's latest postapocalyptic action RPG heads to the PS3 in 2010; Black Isle Studios castaway Obisidan Entertainment developing.

Released in October of last year, Fallout 3 was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, having shipped 4.7 million units worldwide in its first week. The game also performed well in the awards circuit, taking the top honours at the 2009 Game Developers Choice Awards last month during the Game Developers Conference.

Given that performance, it comes as little surprise that Bethesda Softworks won't be dallying in bringing a follow-up to market. At an event in London today, the publisher announced that a new Fallout game will be coming to the PS3 in 2010. Titled Fallout: New Vegas, the game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, whose most recent works include Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir and the upcoming Alpha Protocol. The studio was also at work on the third-person action title Aliens RPG before Sega canceled it earlier this year.

Obsidian Entertainment was founded in 2003 by Feargus Urquhart and others from Interplay's now-shuttered Black Isle Studios, developer of the original Fallout games. On hearing that the Fallout licence had fallen to Bethesda, Urquhart said: "Good Luck! That's probably somewhat horrible to say, but I think the team at Bethesda has their work cut out for them. This is mostly because there is almost nothing that they can do that will make the Fallout fans happy."

Fallout: New Vegas will be set in the Fallout universe but will not be a direct sequel to Fallout 3. However, it will stick to that game's RPG format, rather than branching out into real-time strategy territory as happened with 2001's Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.

Pre-Order Details:

The Classic Pack (GameStop):

? Armored Vault 13 Suit - Extensively patched up and dotted with piecemeal armor, this outfit is an homage to the classic ending of the original Fallout.
? Vault 13 Canteen - This handy device is useful for staving off dehydration and providing a small amount of healing in the Mojave Wasteland.
? Weathered 10mm Pistol - A well-worn 10mm pistol that packs an extra punch despite its modest size.
? 5 Stimpaks - Food and water are good for long-term healing, but when the fighting is fierce, Stimpaks help keep Wastelanders upright.

The Tribal Pack (Amazon):

? Tribal Raiding Armor - Pieced together from scraps of armor, this outfit provides protection without impacting mobility.
? Broad Machete - This heavy-bladed melee weapon does high damage against limbs and can quickly deal out a flurry of attacks.
? 5 Bleak Venom doses - Useful on any Melee Weapon, Bleak Venom makes short work of most living targets.
? 10 Throwing Spears - If you would like to silently pin an enemy's head to a wall, Throwing Spears are the way to do it.

The Caravan Pack (Steam and Walmart):

? Lightweight Leather Armor - This hand-modified suit of leather armor reduces its overall weight without impacting its ability to protect.
? Sturdy Caravan Shotgun - Despite its rough appearance, this Caravan Shotgun will reliably fire 20 gauge shells until the Brahmin come home.
? 4 Repair Kits - Useful for repairing any outfit or weapon, Repair Kits are a valuable tool for any caravaner.
? Binoculars ? The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous place, but with these trusty Binoculars you'll be able to spot trouble coming.

The Mercenary Pack (Best Buy):

? Lightweight Metal Armor - Modified for long-range travel, this Metal Armor sacrifices some protection for mobility and overall weight.
? Mercenary's Grenade Rifle - Though similar to other 40mm Grenade Rifles in the Mojave Wasteland, this model has a faster reload cycle.
? 3 Super Stimpaks - When you absolutely, positively, need to keep your blood inside your body, Super Stimpaks fix you up in no time.
? 3 Doctors Bags - Mercenaries and broken limbs go together like Iguana-on-a-Stick and Nuka Cola. Thankfully, these Doctors Bags take a bit of sting out of the inevitable crushed skull.

first reviews coming in for this game: say its fun, but its almost identical in feel to fallout 3.

I see nothing wrong with that. I thought Fallout 3 was a great game, and I really liked the feel of it. I'm completely cool with it as long as the story changes, which it did.

Diva is torturing me though. She picked my copy up for me this morning, and just sent me a text picture of it sitting in the car. I'm ready to go home now!

the hardcore mode sounds very interesting. changes how the game is played since you have to spend time on surviving and being alive as well as fighting off mutants and completing quests.

off, you should suddenly get the "food poisoning," and go home :D

the only other person I saw on New Vegas was Zeus.

So far, I really like it. I was up way too late playing it last night though. :hilarious: I just couldn't put it down. They did make a few interesting changes that are going to make you have to plan how you play the game. In addition to the speech checks that you could pass or fail depending on your skill level and luck, you also have skill checks. In one side quest, I had to convince a shop keeper to help save the town, but he'd only do it if I had a high enough barter skill, and another NPC would only give me dynamite if my explosives skill was high enough. This is where the skill books help. This time instead of the skill books only raising their related skill by 1 point, now they raise it by 10, but the effect wears off after a little while like any of the chems you take in the game.

The extras in the collectors edition were really sweet too! Thanks again Diva for the great birthday present! :scat:

Fallout: New Vegas Bugs To Be Addressed In Upcoming Patch

"We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms," Bethesda PR Manager Pete Hines told IGN. "Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming."

Fallout: New Vegas was released just Tuesday in North America and just yesterday in Europe. New Vegas is about the player being betrayed and left for dead. After being patched up by the doctor while simultaneously creating your character, you’re left with an option before heading out of the operations room. To switch Hardcore mode on (which isn’t recommended) or keep it off and play the game Fallout 3 style.

Hardcore mode is where the developer Obsidian decided on making New Vegas that bit more difficult and interesting or annoying? You consistently have to keep hydrated, eating food, sleeping and you cannot fast travel if the distance will make you sick of dehydration. Your Stimpaks also do not heal instantly but overtime and your bullets can add weight to your inventory.

When prompted to choose if the player would like to switch on or off Hardcore mode at the beginning of the game, a message appears informing the player that there will be a special reward waiting for them upon completion.

The special award is….drum roll please.
The Hardcore trophy/achievement. Unfortunately, yeah that is it. So there you have it, a kick in the ass.

But you don't have to play on hard and hardcore. You can beat it on easy and hardcore if you want. Then on hard again (assuming there's a difficulty trophy... Which i'm sure there is).

Fallout: New Vegas Patch Incorporates 200 Fixes

It still isn't perfect, but it's a start. Fallout: New Vegas has now been patched, meaning you can download an update now which rectifies a whole host of issues and complaints inherent in the game. In essence, we're looking at a Newer New Vegas then.

Bethesda hasn't issued a complete list of the patch's contents, but does go so far to say on its forums that the update contains over a staggering "200 fixes in all" according to a post from the game's senior producer, Jason Bergman.

These are primarily quest and scripting fixes, but there's clearly still room for improvement as glitches such as freezing and clipping persist post-patch. In our game they do anyway, so we'd expect to see more updates arriving in the not so distant future.

Just bought the collector's edition today and have been playing it for only a little while. I hope it sucks up my time like Fallout 3 did.

I'm still loving it. It was a little rough taking a week off for vacation, but it was worth it. I haven't noticed any changes since the patch came out. The game still freezes every now and then so I've been saving often, but the story is still really good and the mechanics are still solid like in Fallout 3.

Also, who all is playing this besides myself, Zeus and BTT?

I just bought and started playing it yesterday.

Other than the game freezing like it did in Fallout 3, I'm getting stuck in the air or under things a lot. I've even fallen into a rock and a few other "solid" objects a couple of times.

I also picked up a laser pistol last night in New Vegas named "Pew Pew". I thought it was really cool and Diva got really excited.
