II must be the only the only person that didn't rate this film. I sat through it waiting for it to get good but then it ended. It was the same with The Witch, another film people loved.
Maybe I've just seen too many horror movies that I am now desensitised to it.
I don't think it has much to do with being desensitised to the scariness but rather the way in which those movies take their sweet time to create a dreadful atmosphere, which tends to appeal to art-house horror fans.
I also never get scared by horror movies, but I love those two movies nontheless.
Therefore, I would also be all over a premium release!
I'm in the same boat. It has nothing to do with being desensitized (I've seen a shitton of horror movies too) and I'd even argue The Witch and Hereditary appeal less to people who haven't seen many horror films, expecting the typical haunted house jump scare variety and being sorely disappointed. A quick look at the discrepancy between critics reviews and audience scores of both films corroborates this. I wasn't waiting for the film to "get going" since for me, I was already immersed into the slow-burn, tension building throughout.I don't think it has much to do with being desensitised to the scariness but rather the way in which those movies take their sweet time to create a dreadful atmosphere, which tends to appeal to art-house horror fans.
