Steelbook & Collecting FAQ's:

Q: Where can I find a list of Steelbooks released?

A: blu-raysteelbooks.com

Q: Can I play movies contained inside Steelbooks on my Blu-Ray Player?

A: It depends-Blu-Rays are coded with Region A, B or C. Most Blu-Rays are "unlocked", regardless of what region they are, but it's always a good idea to check this forum or web resources before buying, as some are "locked".

Q: What are the differences between Steelbooks™, Iron Packs™, Metal Paks™, Viva Metal Boxes, Tins, etc?

A: Check out pics and discussion in our forum here

Q: What does "G1" and "G2" mean when discussing Steelbooks?

A: "G1" (1st Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a DVD-sized case. And "G2" (2nd Generation) refers to a Blu-Ray in a Blu-Ray-sized case.

Q: How to fix a loose disc on a steelbook you want to keep factory sealed that came with a floater?

A: Fixing a loose disc

Q: How do I navigate international shopping sites?

A: You can download a free 'add on' for most browsers called 'Google Translate'. Once you have it installed, the pages will translate automatically.

Q: I have many more questions-is there a general list of links to help me learn about Steelbooks, protecting them, etc?

A: Yes, here

Well I hope this doesn't put the cat among the pigeons, but as this is to do with HiDef format I hope I can mention :hddvd: here without being sworn at and I know DB has a soft spot for them. My point is that I collected a lot of HD DVDs (which I am now selling to fund my Steelbook collection), some are keepers and as they are open will allow me to enjoy the films in 1080p/24 without opening the Steels. I am only worried that come the next format, Steelbooks.will go the way of HD DVDs and that is said by an officianado and supporter of the format who was sad to see it die. Still at least they have beauty which was lacking in :hddvd:

To be honest, I don't see a new format on the horizon taking over very soon.

With our current technology, you'd need at least a 11 foot screen in your living room to see any true upgrade in picture quality. So given that, I don't see blu-ray going away for a while. :)

And it's like that upgrade problem - once everyone gets the blu-ray version of some movie, they aren't going to upgrade from their current copy if it doesn't represent a major upgrade for them.

Why turn around and buy the newest thing when the blu-rays work fine?

So having said that, in my opinion, blu-ray steelbooks will be here for a number of years going forward.

What's messing up the hobby are all the damn reprints. lol.

OK this isn't meant as a challenge and I'll probably find that it's here already, but I'm wondering if someone here has the time and knowledge to put together a spreadsheet of all :blu-ray: steelbooks. Each tab being a country and in release date order. If someone can provide me with the data I'd be happy to do it as I have time on my hands atm.

What do folks think ?

A member named Morphine gave it a shot a long time ago. We've been trying to update the forum will all titles to make sure that we have a catalog of threads for every title.

I know that bluraysteelbooks.com has a list of steelbooks, but I'm not sure when it was last updated.

Here's Morphine's google document - if you want to take what he's done and update it with your own document, I'd say go for it.

We have a lot of the recent ones, in the "upcoming releases" thread.

Hope that helps. :D

OK I'll give it a go. I'll use that as starting point only, already have idea on how I want it to look but don't know if folks will agree. Keep it simple. Will give each country a tab on Excel spreadsheet (cos I prefer it) but if multiple suppliers eg US has Target, Best Buy, FYE etc they will all be on same sheet. I'll have to assume some of the data such as dates and UPC are correct. Not sure how to handle re-releases, eg I have both (German) versions of 300 but they have same barcode so technically the same.

On re-releases, we've been treating them as different steelbooks only if they differ from the original release. Like a few of those Warner steelbooks that got printed with FSK logos on the 2nd run - so 300 would be an example of that.

I'm unsure if the barcode would be different or not on all steelbooks.

If it's the same steelbook, 100%, then you might want to differentiate that it was released again, but other than that, I don't think you need to do much.

Update to my damaged RED and Kill Bill, store owner Bert agreed to send me the replacement for the RED and Kill Bill.
Hope the replacement comes in nicely. :ohno:

I just received my first package from http://www.movies-blu-ray.nl/ and I would like to add in my feedback from ordering from this site.

Store owner did response to all your queries and responsive.
But I received my package will 2 badly dented titles, RED and Kill Bill.

Packaging were done badly, only newspaper on a soft cardboard box. Bubble wrap were to minimal.
I will never order from here again if I have the choice. Maybe it's just my luck.

You may have better luck.

Didn't know where to put this so feel free to move.

All my "cheap" German HP 1-6 arrived today from Amazon.de. FSK sticker is on OUTSIDE of the shrinkwrap. Dunno if this will be of interest to some folks but thought I'd pass it on.

Andy there's a few things I am not familiar with so if either you or someone looking on could assist. Under Canada on Morphine's list they are are all FS releases but with the Disney releases some are marked Canada, some Quebec. Any reason for this as I noticed they have different UPC's ?

There's loads of other questions but I cannot think of them atm.

Yeah, sorry I didn't see this until now.

The Disney steelbooks are all multiple disc releases. There's a law, I think, in Quebec that prohibits the sale of digital copies, or something like that, so the Quebec version would be different than that.

Also, the slip cover on the back of the Quebec releases were all in French, so there was an outside packaging difference too.

That's why on Morphine's list, those are listed twice.

Thanks for that. I'll list them separately. Slowly ploughing through it, too many Bank Holidays and Weddings!! What I would like is to get an appeal out for photos of front, back and insides as well but scanned rather than using a digicam for consistency. Any thoughts?

First draft should be available in about a week, fingers crossed.

There is one very subtle difference which has probably been covered here before but thought I'd mention it again. Prices on Amazon.de include VAT which is great except that German VAT is 19% whereas in UK it's 20%, so under EU law they have to apply VAT at the correct rate for the destination country which is why Amazon.de prices increase on the invoice when coming to the UK. (What was €13.99 becomes €14.11, not much of a change but an increase nonetheless). Bummer or what !

Help Please !!

Hey guys just recently got the sony s370 blu ray upgraded it finally,, i have updated it etc via the internet..

I recently obtained unstoppable from yes asia and it will not play , says it is region locked , how can I unlock this and make it region free

Any help is appreciated

thanks
shepswfc

Was your player region free before your update? If so you will have to down-grade the firmware which will be a pain in the ass and you'll have to search online for the different firmware files to see if its even possible.

Shep-a disc that is "locked" to another region cannot play on a player that is not region switch capable. There is no way to "unlock" a disc (though I am not sure if you're asking to unlock a player, or the disc), but you can google to see if your player has any remote codes out there to make it "region-switch" capable. If not, you either can't watch the disc, need to buy a different player that can switch regions, or have your player modified by a company that installs a "kit" to make it region switch capable.

I managed to pick up the blu ray for only £48.50 so im not that fussed , il just watch it on my ps3 which should work fine , thanks anyways guys , tis a shame though

Shep, unless your PS3 is modified to play discs from other regions, you probably won't be able to play a disc that is "locked" to Region A (UK is Region B). Good luck!
