Is it true certain copies come with a manufacturer's horizontal scratch on the front? Would that render it worth much less than ones without the scratch?

Yes its true, there are a lot of defects out there, sellers are using pics of a good copy and selling there defects at crazy EEK! prices.
beware of this when buying, when getting mine i refused 5 sellers that did not give me picture's of the copy they were selling .finally found one who understood and sent 8 pics at different angles. :D
WELL guess who got the sale, and i finally got a beautiful new/sealed copy in MINT CONDITION.
SO my advise, be carefull ,patient, and smart.GOOD LUCK WITH THE HUNT :scat:

Thanks! I did find one, and the seller has admitted there is a pretty obvious scratch on the front cover, do debating whether I should buy it...concerned that 6 months down the road, the only thing I see on the steelbook is the scratch!

Yeh,
It's a matter of choice and finace sometimes. You may get a scratch one for a couple $$$ cheaper now, but in the long term will you have wished you'd held out a little longer mayby payed some extra $$$ and searched for a better copy.
Personally, i look at it this way "you have these steels for a long time"
but it also depends on what direction you want your collection to go in.Everone has different ideas, thats why no two collections are the same. GOOD LUCK

I've seen some BIN on ebay for about 70 or 80 dollars which is extremely low for one of the first steelbooks to come out.

I Would hazard a guess that these are not new/sealed, as i stated it all depends on the direction you want your collection to go in.
I do agree with (gman102081) even the top price ive seen for a new/sealed mint copy is by far lower than many other steels,of simular category.
