Hey guys, I have been chatting with Choi on some ways to possibly work this out. HDN has always assisted in doing group buys for the community, whenever possible. Choi and Tony have been AMAZING in creating exclusives worth collecting...and pricing them fairly for collectors, imo. There is a HUGE amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to manage demand and order processing. Rest assured if this can be solved for everyone and we can play a part- we will. Thanks everyone!

This is highly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing more about how this might/could work.

Thanks digitalbabe, and happy anniversary, too!

I can understand the extra workload/resources required to carry out a group buy, and why it isn't a financially sustainable business model, especially with an international online store already active.

But what I can't understand is why HDN are given exclusive preference and a unique opportunity to choose artwork (amongst other things), yet are given no exclusive preference when it comes to the actual purchasing of the product.

With a group buy no longer an option for members, the only option is to compete against individuals worldwide once it goes live. As members here have already alluded to, the sheer amount of demand is going to cause problems ordering, and frustration. Are Kimchi's servers capable of processing hundreds, possibly thousands of orders in the space of 300 seconds?

I understand not everyone is going to get a copy, and there will ultimately be disappointed members regardless - but if the current situation stays as it is, I suspect there's going to be a lot more complaints and disappointment directed at Kimchi, than if there was some system in place to reward members for their input. I would like to think of the relationship here between Kimchi and HDN as mutually beneficial, but you have to admit now without group buys, that's no longer the case.

There have been several ideas put forward on the thread already that are sensible, and fair. My suggestion would be a unique HDN member-only purchase link that goes live 30 minutes before worldwide release, up to a pre-determined percentage of the print run. This would not only reduce server load come general release time, but also give HDN members the opportunity to purchase over the general public. Is this something Choi, or a senior member here at HDN could put forward to Kimchi for consideration?

It's not a bad idea, but once everyone realises that this is happening half the world will join HDN just to get this 30 min window.

Then limit it the same as group buys, only those with 30 non spam posts or more

And how many members do you think we have?

Even though you get a special link, it takes only one member to share that special link to others and they can order without being a member of HDN.

As digitalbabe already mentioned, hosting a groupbuy is very time consuming, but honestly Kimchidvd should have seen this coming.

Servers cannot take the amount of traffic, this has already been proved in the past and with the knowledge your releasing which may be the most anticipated and sought after release of the year, their should have been some more thinking behind it.

Ofcourse I don't know what goes behind curtains and I'm not saying they didn't think it through at all, but with success comes also thinking ahead to expand and meeting higher needs.

I have faith in HDN and Kimchi to come to an understanding for a fitting solution otherwise it's just gonna be a mad scramble once this goes live and their gonna be Alot of steelbook enthousiasts which are not gonna secure a copy only to find out the next day that the steel is on evilbay for 6x more of the retailprice.

And that ain't a good thing.

We need to instigate a buddy system

A couple of suggestions:

1. Don't set the production limit so low. Take pre-order before determining the number Kimchi wants to press out. That way everyone who wants to pre-order can get one.

2. Limit to 1 copy per person. I can't stress this enough. Make sure the cart rejects additional copy of the same thing.

3. If we already have it on our cart, let us keep it. It's frustrating to not be able to register your purchase when the cart reset your item everytime.

1. production number will likely be 2k for international ordering and then maybe additional qty like 1k for local (not sure).

2. every member should be able to order at least 2. minimum. this will probably be double the print run of Frozen exclusive.

3. kimchi site needs major improvement upgrades /overhaul

the group buy for Frozen was limited to 1 copy wasn't it? Are there really people who own the Futureshop & Play.com steels that need this as well-seriously?EEK!

I have the taiwan Iron Man 3 & have IronMan 2 on my trade thread-so as a completeist I am obviously very much looking to shell out for the Kimchi Iron man

As a completist, you should know the answer to this is 'yes'. ;)

Giving preferential treatment to a closed group of consumers who have been involved in part of the design of an item is a simple goodwill law of business. If something can be done to obey that rule then I have complete trust in DB, Choi and Tony to find a workable system that benefits all involved.

I regret to mention that HDN has gone backwards due to no fault of theirs / us.:(

1. Blufans - no more GBs
2. Kimchi - no more GBs going forward though relationship as such is healthy.

Kimchi should consider scaling up their infrastructure, otherwise many among us are going to miss out hot ticket Steels I am afraid.

Just my 2 cents worth. Shouldn't a GB be a last resort due to a limitation on shipping or accessibility? While I appreciate a GB as I have participated in many and helped in a couple, I feel in this case direct ordering works best. The process of cross checking accounts to ensure GB members are not double dipping is probably a very tidious task considering the number of participants. I am in favor of direct ordering whether I luck out or miss out on an exclusive. Besides since everyone faces the same issues I think it is a fair process.

or on this site. you guys forget about this site's marketplace. but no, it's all ebay.

Hey guys-one of the things to consider is that the popularity of Kimchi has been directly affected (in a good way) due to the support of all of you in our community...as has been the case for other retailers' exclusives. I have no doubt that that has taxed the Kimchi ordering system in additional ways.

I'd like to ask that we keep this thread and all threads as positive as possible. I believe we must support retailers who go 'above and beyond' in providing well priced and unique releases in times when they make announcements that please everyone, and in times when they face challenges, for whatever reason.

Believe me, if there was a 'snap your fingers' solution it would have been already announced. However, the same people who run this site (very, very small group of people-HDN is not owned by some huge cooperation-and they are actually involved in every day problem solving, building the site, and about 100 other matters, each week)...and, we have ourselves shipped 100's of copies of other retailer exclusives in order to help meet the demand that our very community has created in the most active Steelbook community there is over the years.

Kimchi's upgrades and other matters are for them to work on, and decide. As Steelbook fans ourselves, we'll continue to support their efforts to keep runs as low as possible, and packages as unique as possible. Steelbooks have increased ENORMOUSLY in popularity...driven in large part by the excitement of the HDN community and all of our cumulative direct feedback to a multitude of studios, retailers and other decision makers-that feedback has come in large part from all of you.

This is naturally a catch 22-Kimchi is not the first retailer that has had to meet the challenges that come with that increase in demand of their exclusives, but I know that Tony has and continues to work hard on their end.

To a couple of comments about 'special treatment', 'scalping', 'preferential' and other remarks. The thing is that 100's of copies of exclusives are already sold to members of the HDN community. So if there is a way to guarantee copies to them, then I see it as an extra perk that comes from being a part of this community where members every day choose not only to spend time here, but purchase items and share thoughts on items being released. HDN has always been feedback and community driven, and helping to provide access to exclusives or other special stock alerts, etc, comes with being a member here.

Rest assured guys....and as I mentioned before if we are able to help in any way we will be happy to do so. Thank you for your support while this is discussed further. Please stay tuned....
