The first four in the UK were general releases, not retailer exclusives. Got my copies from Amazon UK.This is a Zavvi exclusive? Was the last wave Zavvi exclusive limited to 2000 copies as well? I can't remember. I'm a bit annoyed I missed a "My Neighbour Totoro" last time
Yeah, the same for me, no hurry with the normal releases (even though it's Ghibli
). Though if I get a too strong urge I might as well pre-order them. 
Possibly, but I can't remember the last time one of their "ultra limited" catalogue title steelbooks has sold out at pre-order price... they usually drop at least once before going OOS, and a lot of the time they even come back in stock after "selling out". Thankfully, I think most people have realised this now, so don't pre-order, which gives the price a chance to drop even further. I haven't pre-ordered a single Zavvi exclusive catalogue steel this year and managed to get all the ones I wanted once they eventually landed in the bargain bin, so it's a risk I'm willing to continue taking. Obviously it's up to you though!
This is a beautifully, magical movie. Up there with Totoro!
