Is everyone jumping at this because we're so deprived of good looking Steelbooks or is the film actually decent? (I've never seen it)

It's a decent film. 8 out of 10 for me.
Lots of review noise was made about the Theatrical Cut being disjointed, missing narratives with unexplained plot jumps and having odd character development. There was also the Orlando Bloom choice as lead. Hmm, he's definitely weak and I'm still not sure that was a great choice. It wasn't particularly well reviewed or perhaps indeed liked - although I didn't mind it.

It wasn't until the issues with studio involvement and the release of the Directors cut that the film really made the leap from okay to very good. It's a much more coherent cut and it's absolutely 100% worth watching - just take Orlando Bloom with a grain of salt. It's not that his performance is bad by any means, in fact it's quite solid, but that's all you'll get from Bloom in this film. No gravitas and lacking charisma. Russell Crowe his is not.
Get past that and the film is extremely good in the Directors cut. Probably one of the best and more essential directors cuts in a sea of unnecessary additions to that area of post theatrical film cuts.

Scott apparently hates the Theatrical Cut and believes the Director Cut is where his original intention for the film lies.
