Undoubtedly the most grown-up of the FRANKENSTEIN films and the most moving and despite the negativity surrounding this version it's a modern classic (IMO) although I admit I have a preference for the Hammer version but maybe that's just because I grew up with those and I like everything Hammer from "The Hound of the Baskervilles" to the classic horror films - and the not so classic such as the wonderful "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde" - and of course there's always Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and a bevy of buxom babes.

As for the steelbook: would have preferred a full gloss finish as most dark steelbooks without fine detail in the artwork look better in that finish (again IMO).

For me personally this film will always be "Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein" rather than Mary Shelley's despite it reportedly being the most faithful film adaptation.

Nothing among the official poster artwork of any use for the steelbook front artwork to compare with this image and good to see that they decided on a clever adaptation of the U.K. Amaray art:-

EXTRAS / SPECIAL FEATURES: None that I can see.

Not many light-hearted/fun/different "Frankenstein" films around to watch apart from
FRANKENHOOKER, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and RE-ANIMATOR at a stretch that I can recall off the top of my head as opposed to more than a few for DRACULA (such as LOVE AT FIRST BITE, DRACULA, DEAD AND LOVING IT and BLACULA).

If you haven't seen it, and from the way you wax lyrical over this, I imagine you haven't, I would highly recommend watching Frankenstein The True Story. The cast is lavish: James Mason, David McCallum, Leonard Whiting, Michael Sarrazin, Jayne Seymour, Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, Nicola Pagett, Agnes Moorehead . . . with sets to match.

Whilst not loyal to the novel, it is faithful to the true spirit in a way that you seldom see in a Frankenstein film. Co written by Christopher Isherwood, it is really enjoyable; for me the best.

p.s. if the IMDB means anything, it is, at last count,, the highest rated of all the Frankenstein films.

Am I the only one who thinks the art looks utter w*nk?

I'll have to wait for pics, did love the film when I was younger though

Steelbook Finish
  • Creative white plate
  • Overall Matt Varnish
  • Gloss Spot UV on the front title and lightning

What's creative white plate?

Does Young Frankenstein count? It's rated much higher than this :)

On reflection I think the front is pretty cool with the charges of electricity surrounding the monster in a kind of electrified spider's web and it's certainly the best artwork ever used for home video (IMO) especially considering artwork on all previous releases are pretty much of a muchness.

RE: "Creative White Plate" - I'm guessing that's for the eyes so that they really stand out against the dark blue background.

@aLLu
You quoted my post but didn't say anything

was it because you agree with me or do you know what creative white plate is?

RE: "Creative White Plate" - I'm guessing that's for the eyes so that they really stand out against the dark blue background.

[/SPOILER]

Wouldn't that be creative white palate? Or am I thinking of somthing else (obviously I don't taste Steelbooks lol!)
