Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play, with at least three factions being considered for inclusion; including American, European and Middle Eastern factions.

The game's E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes. The game will boast numerous classes for players to specialize in; including medics, commandos and field demolition specialists. It has not been announced if the game will be a third person shooter, like Zipper's previous SOCOM games, or a first person shooter.

MAG: Massive Action Game is the tentative name for an upcoming MMO shooter exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in development by Zipper Interactive. The game was announced at Sony's E3 2008 press conference, and will be released sometime in 2009. Various subtitles are being considered for the game, including MAG: Shadow War, MAG: Zero, MAG: Global Assault and MAG: Final Hour.

A PS3 exclusive, the game will utilize a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game's ranking system. Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay. The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

MAG “Moves,” Plus the New Beta Program

We have tremendous plans for our “ever-changing global war” that is MAG — and we’re starting with PlayStation Move!

4904467021_1c2789730a.jpg

That’s right, later this Autumn MAG will offer full compatibility with the PlayStation Move! This added support means that users have another way to experience the most ambitious first-person shooter out there. Pinpoint accuracy and easy access to all of the game’s mechanics ensure that players of any type — be they hardened veterans or new recruits — can enjoy a shooting experience unlike any other.

But PlayStation Move support isn’t all we’re working on. Because our upcoming content is so important to the game and its future, we want your assistance to make sure we get it right! With that notion in mind we’re pleased to announce that, one week from today on August 24, we’re inviting existing MAG owners to take part in the all-new MAG Beta program!

What are you going to play and test, you ask? How does this hit you?

1) Escalation Game Type — battle it out with all three factions at once on three never-before-seen maps
2) New Weapons — each PMC has access to three new guns (9 total) for added firepower
3) Clan Deploy — a highly-requested community feature that allows clan leaders to launch games with up to 128 clan members in a single match
4) Updated Skill Tree — enjoy more customization than you’ve ever had before with new skills and an improved progression system
5) In-game Economy System — earn “credit points” by completing objectives and killing enemies to purchase new weapons and gear
6) Additional Character Slots — Create a persona for Raven, Valor and SVER on one account for maximum testing flexibility

To participate in the new MAG beta, all you have to do is download the client software from the PlayStation Store when it becomes available next week, insert your MAG disc into the PlayStation 3, sign-in to the beta client and… BOOM! You’re good to go. Reminder: You must have the MAG disc in your PS3 in order for the new beta client to work.

Amazingly, today’s announcement only scratches the surface of what’s planned for MAG’s future. That’s why we’re updating the Official MAG Blog constantly over the next few weeks with new and more detailed information of what you can look forward to, including a post today that explores, in detail, the complexities of our new Escalation game mode.

As always, the entire team at Zipper Interactive would like to thank you, our fans, for your feedback, loyalty and enthusiasm. Your continued support is what makes MAG what it is today, and it’s what inspires us to keep striving to make it better.

Zipper Interactive details MAG 2.0

Zipper Interactive has lifted the lid on the list of new additions gamers can expect to see from its forthcoming MAG 2.0 patch, which is scheduled for release next month.

Speaking on the shooter’s official blog, Zipper’s Jeremy Dunham commented, "All the feedback and suggestions you've made from countless hours spent playing our new MAG Beta program will pay off in the retail version of MAG in a very big way."

"We're calling it MAG 2.0 for a reason and it's because of the sheer number of fantastic new additions."

Among the list of additions fans can expect include the following:

- PlayStation Move support
- An increased level cap that goes to level 70
- A revamped Skill Tree that allows for the deepest character customization and specialization ever found in a first-person shooter
- A brand-new in-game economy that lets you earn credits to spend on weapons and items from the also-new "Supply Depot"

MAG Escalation DLC Coming November 2

5123145379_75c2ccd0ab_b.jpg

This past summer, many of you took part in our latest MAG Beta program to help us test out a number of new features slated for our recently-released update, MAG 2.0, and future DLC. Thanks to your devotion, we gathered a surplus of fantastic data that allowed us to make MAG a better game… and we’re not done yet!

Though the MAG 2.0 patch has been available since the end of September, the DLC portion of the beta has remained unreleased — but not for too much longer. Starting November 2, our three-faction gunplay whirlwind, the “Escalation” Add-on Pack, will be available for download from the PlayStation Store for $9.99 (US)!

But we aren’t stopping there.

To celebrate the release of the Escalation DLC, we’re offering two other deals to existing and would-be fans. Check this out:

Interdiction Add-on Pack: Now $4.99 (US); reduced from original price of $9.99 (US)

MAG Starter Kit: $14.99 (US): An almost $30 (US) value and everything new MAG users could want: Interdiction and Escalation Add-on packs, a 30-day trial for MAG character slots B and C, six official MAG PS3 avatars that sport Raven, SVER, and Valor characters and badges, and three dynamic PS3 themes (one for each PMC).

If you didn’t get a chance to play it in our MAG Beta, the Escalation add-on supports up to 96 players, or one 32-man platoon for each PMC, as a separate in-game mode that pits the forces of Raven, SVER, and Valor against each other at the same time. The aspirations for each PMC is to earn the requisite number of points before time runs out or, if time does expire, to have the most points overall. Whichever team meets this goal wins the map and additional Shadow War points.

Escalation gameplay is set up in two phases: For phase one, all three teams battle to hold the map’s A, B and C objectives — but when any of the three PMCs gains control of two of the three objectives, phase two begins. In this second phase, the original three objectives are locked and a new fourth objective (D) opens up. Now, the PMC that forced the phase shift must defend objective D against both attacking groups as long as possible; if D is lost, then play reverts back to phase one again and the war continues on until we have a winner or time runs out.

As beta players have already seen, Escalation offers three completely different environments (maps) to the MAG universe, including the volcanic beaches “Isla de Magma,” the mountainous “Silverback Ridge,” and the desert wasteland of “Radiant Barrens.” As an added bonus, our new add-on pack isn’t just made up of new maps – there are also nine previously-unavailable weapons we’re throwing into the mix too:

Raven: Gotha Elite (Assault Rifle) | KP21 (Machine Gun) | Kinmark SRS (Sniper Rifle)

SVER: Tamsen MK2 (Assault Rifle | Ariet SFW (Machine Gun) | Rubakho SVR (Sniper Rifle)

Valor: M31 CIR (Assault Rifle) | M245 (Machine Gun) | Sentinel M421 (Sniper Rifle)

MAG Escalation DLC and patch v2.02a is coming tomorrow

As we stated yesterday, our MAG “Escalation” add-on pack has seen a short delay from its original release date of November 2. The good news is that the postponement is a short one and that our new DLC will be available starting tomorrow, November 4.

As a thank you to our loyal fans, we’ve activated a “Double XP” bonus of + 100% to MAG as a whole, which stacks with other in-game bonuses for quite an XP haul (note: the “Directives” queue will not award extra XP during this period). As of yesterday, we’ve also kept our originally-planned price drop for the first MAG add-on pack, “Interdiction,” to $4.99 (US).

In addition, as some of you may have already discovered through PSN promotional materials, we’re also offering a special discount of $7.99 (US) on the “Escalation” DLC pack! This promotion will be offered to anyone who previously purchased Interdiction at its original price prior to 12am Pacific Time, October 28, 2010*. The discounted price for previous Interdiction customers will last until November 9.

Early tomorrow morning, during MAG’s regularly-scheduled maintenance period a small downloadable patch, MAG v2.02a, will also be released to enable the Escalation mode for owners of the DLC. You can find the official list of fixes in the “patch alert” notes below.

I liked move with Killzone 3... But haven't played it with MAG. The thing that sucks about my room is that there's literally no light. So I can only play move games during the day.

*I CAN at night, but not as well... And I don't think I can play EyePet at night. It doesn't work well at all if it's slightly dark.
